I guess you're right. I would still like them to rejigg the set a bit though. If they want the attention to the middle area with the desk, they should remove the 'soft area' alltogher, rather than have the area look like something should have been there.

All the extra lightboxes and random colored lines in the screens also create so much more unnecessary clutter.



Look how much cleaner the set looked before.

I do miss that original look from when they first moved into TVC, the extra light boxes on top of the big screen and the colour lines in the screens are a bit odd, but that they aren't that bad.

Unbelieveable that by April they'll have been at TVC as long as they were in Studio 5 - that has flown by.

The desk is ugly but clearly there for practical reasons and I wouldn't be surprised if next week full social distancing was restored to the daytime output as sadly that is the situation we seem to be in again. I do think though the curved one they had when they used the studio for a primetime debate on ITV (see here) was much nicer though, although the trick with social distancing design really is to break up the furniture so the big gaps between presenters don't look so unnatural when the set is designed to have something in between them anyway.

I’m not sure about that. Apart from a short spell in St7 the main breakfast programme always came from St5 from 1993 onwards albeit whether it was called GMB or Daybreak. Perhaps we are talking about a semantic difference?

GMB only started in 2014 and is different enough from anything that came before it to be considered a new programme.

Also the second version of Daybreak came from Studio 3 between September 2012 and April 2014 (and GMTV decamped there during its dying months).

It has rarely been an OB since he returned to doing it in the studio, as opposed to from home.

Semantics then on my part I think hence why I referred to the ‘main breakfast programme’. I started getting up at 3am to get to TLS to service these programmes in 1991 (a few months before they went on air) from St5, the main programme was still being produced from St5 when I retired pretty much a couple of decades later - hence my comment about ‘the main programme’ coming from TLS St5 rather longer than TVC.

I don’t watch any of this sort of programming now I’m not paid to!

Interms of going back to the old desk, I do think it needs to happen but with COVID restrictions it would mean that the amount of people they could have in the studio is limited.

I just don't understand why they had to for such a weird sci-fi design. Surely it would've made more sense to go for a larger version of the old desk?

I imagine at some point during 2022 there will be changes made to the set given the changes behind the scenes.

I wonder if keeping the small desk for the main hosts, then a smaller separate desk (like they had in the corner) for the newsreader and then perhaps a couple of chairs with a coffee table on the other side for guests, would have looked better. Would enable the social distancing but the slightly different areas just make it a bit more visually interesting.

They could have just gotten some one person high tables with a bar chair for each of the tables and then put them around the set. In the same style of the newsreader desk, but slightly higher so the guests are on the same level as the presenters
