Turning back to RTL, it has been a year of massive transactions for the pan-European broadcaster, as they are in the process of selling M6 to archrival TF1, trying to sell RTL Belgium and their big rebrand expected for autumn. Now, RTL has announced that their RTL Nederland division has agreed to reverse-takeover its multimedia rival Talpa Network (formed from the ashes of Talpa Media after being sold to ITV Studios) in exchange for John de Mol and his family (through Talpa Holding) taking a 30 percent stake at the company, which will remain controlled by RTL. The merger, expected to close by early 2022, will bring the RTL TV channels (RTL 4, RTL 5, RTL 7, RTL 8 and RTL Z, as well as its cable TV channels) together with the SBS Nederland channels (SBS6, Net5, Veronica TV and SBS 9), although divestments are expected to happen to comply with European rules. Alongside this, RTL will get back control of Radio 538 and Radio 10, as well as getting control of Sky Radio and Radio Veronica and the rest of Talpa Network's radio, print and digital assets.

Following up on this, Belgian media are reporting that we've got another madness buyout at RTL. The VTM division of DPG Media has agreed to buy the RTL Belgium division of the European group in a joint venture with Rossel, owners of French newspaper Le Soir, after SBS Belgium (Telenet/Liberty Global) went out of the race for the broadcaster after the second phase of the bid for the division. This will mean RTL TVI will stop working with M6 for content provision, and Bel RTL will end its relationship with its French counterpart from which the radio network was born. Additionally, RTL TVI and Bel RTL, as well as its sister networks, will be aligned with the operations of VTM and its Flemish radio networks (including Qmusic). Additionally, DPG Media will acquire a stake in the merged RTL Nederland, alongside the RTL Group and Talpa Holding.

Media pluralism is dead in Belgium as well.......more and more consolidation is not the answer to the streaming giants, it only destroys pluralism in the media, all these super mergers should be stopped. Also it feels like if Bertelsmann wants to simply split up RTL Group, by basically selling off all of their channels in all the countries that they are in, at this point I won't be surprised if they get of RTL Letzebuerg itself!

I think that's a strange take. Streaming services are changing the media landscape, yes. But I'm not convinced that means there's less media pluralism. It is precisely because of increased competition from nimbler (principally online) players that the old media titans are being forced to adapt. Those owners who can't deliver a viable product will sell out - in only some cases is that through consolidation with direct competitors in a given market. In other cases, it's through selling to (for example) overseas operators looking to expand their territorial footprint.

As for RTL specifically: it's a little hard to untangle what's up and down in their various corporate moves. But my interpretation is that the group is repositioning itself to focus on what executives consider to be "core business", and divest assets that don't fit the strategy.

There is even the potential chance that SCA outright sells their TV business to 7. SevenWest Media already tried to take over Prime erlier this Year. They only need to find a buyer for SCAs Queensland stations, as 7 already have O&Os there.

Not a bad upgrade for the once proud Greek commercial channel. After they had a transitional look for a while (itself based on the Mega Mou campaign from 2010) after Alter Ego Media (the owners of the One TV news channel) bought the channel from bankrupt Teletypos A.E., this is the first full blown new look for the channel, which is more in line with the One TV branding (already the Gegonota news uses a look based entirely on the One TV graphics).

Tomorrow is the big Sky day for Sky Italia, with the launch of Sky Serie, Investigation (similar to Witness), Documentaries, Nature, and a big EPG reshuffle

While the last three will use the same branding as the UK version, it'll be interesting to look at Sky Serie's branding

Yesterday, Italian (and International) icon Raffaella Carrà, passed away, after an illness we knew little about, and there have been a lot of schedule changes to celebrate her life, especially on RAI1

She was a real important celebrity on Italian TV, being ahead of our society, in the past

Yesterday night, RAI1 showed some older archive bits at 8:35pm, as part of Techetechete', and later at around 9:50pm (although it should've been broadcast earlier, they had technical and logical issues to solve, at the last moment! Typical RAI), the first episode of the Italian edition of "Surprise Surprise" (Carràmba che sorpresa!) from 1995 which was sadly shown zoomed in to 16:9, as it was 4:3.
