I think Martin Lambie-Nairn had the right idea when he decided that the logos themselves should be simple text, with the channel's personalities being expressed through visual properties (e.g. the balloon, the 2s etc).

I agree that the stacked box system was certainly a step back and never really looked right - especially the almost always too small BBC logo. But I do think that Lambie-Nairn's original logo system had its limitations, particularly for non-television brands. For instance, I think the 'circle' radio logos are certainly an improvement on his original radio logos, though the stacked BBC RADIO bit does always look a bit awkward and it could have worked in a stripped format. I also think that adding a single colour to each logo was the one improvement that the boxed system made. IMV, the best move would probably have been to box the stripped logos.

Maybe they can standardize the box into a bar, a la BBC Sport, and align the wordmark with the logo?

I'm pretty sure what we're seeing on these test websites is a work-in-progress - they've simply added the new header onto otherwise unchanged web pages, which is why the logos don't line up. When the updated websites go live, they will have the new channel logos which should (hopefully) line up better with the new BBC logo at the top, as well as new backgrounds - I'm sure they're not going to stick with those red circles on the BBC1 background image which are already several years out-of-date.

I think that's just a relic - there's a similar situation where, if you go onto the schedule or programme page for any BBC Local Radio station on the test website, you'll find that the backgrounds still use the old branding that was replaced a year ago.

Will Auntie officially reveal it to the public soon?

On the contrary, it’s the old one which looks so so wrong after you go to an existing page from that test page. Just makes you think - why are the letters sooo close to the edges. Where’s the spacing!? The new logo is just right.

I am sorry I don’t agree Moz, the 1997 logo is a class apart this looks weird, but I’ll give it a chance.

BBC Select in North America and BBC Kids in Australia are already revealed that new BBC logo to their respective countries, but i don't know for when the official debut of new logo in the UK.

It's just a leftover relic on the test website which didn't get updated when the live website was.

I originally came across the test version of the BBC website some years ago, and have found that although it does sometimes offer a preview of forthcoming changes, at same time old elements of branding are sometimes not updated when they have been on the live website. The BBC Local Radio backgrounds I mentioned another example which remained unchanged on the test site when the live sites were updated with the new purple branding last year.

I gave kudos to it, because once the news came out about BBC Select, and with that awful awful logo I immediately thought, that is going to be the new BBC logo, and God only knows how sorry I am for getting that prediction right

All very interesting. From a logo design POV, each iteration over the years is intended to address additional constraints, as well as advancements in technology.

The 1997 logos, for example, were intended to address the problems of a diluted identity, as well as the constraints of screen pixels (the italic version just wouldn't work), and as an added bonus saved them a lot of money in the long-term.

Those logos though don't work in small spaces, hence why the box logos are still used today in some shape or form. Along with colour, they work much better in avatars, whereas the 1997 ones simply wouldn't.

MDTA pointed out how precise the measurements are on the new logo, which means it looks sharp on most resolutions. The current one is often badly anti-aliased on some screens, making it look a bit blurry.

So, basically, as much as we love the old stuff, they simply aren't fit for purpose.
