Sadly this was inventible. The main issues are the multi-channels rather than the main channels that both companies provide.

The M6 spin-off channels aren't that good, but they do have an excellent children's channel in Gulli, while TF1's aren't also setting the world alight with Series Films having low ratings.

Pure speculation here, but they'll try and get it through by closing the low rated FTA TNT channels such as TF1 Séries Films and 6ter, leaving the combined group with the likes of W9, TFX and TMC.

My main concern would be the merging of the news teams of TF1 and M6. M6 provides a bulletin which is similar to 5 News in the UK. Any merger should ensure that M6 continues to provide a distinct bulletin that isn't editorially the same as TF1's more mainstream bulletin.

I'd understand if M6 would have to use the TF1 weather presenters though, although I prefer the presentation of M6's forecasts over what looks like a dated style of pres on TF1.

I wouldn't be so definitive regarding LCI, nothing is set in stone at this point but it would make sense : it loses money and selling the channel would be a way to guarantee some plurality by creating a new "independent" TV newsroom.

I think Mediawan will be interested in buy one or two entertainment channels from the new group (6ter and/or TF1 Séries Films?). It would be a way for them to enter the free TV space and they have a huge library of content they can show.

Apparently Xavier Niel (co-owner of Mediawan and newspaper Le Monde) is interested in buying LCI so maybe Mediawan could just snatch all three channels from TF1/M6.

What if M6 ends up reviving the old Le Six bulletins, which are narration only and lasted only 6 minutes?

I quickly went through M6's broadcast licence agreement on the CSA website to see if having newscasts on the channel is a requirement and apparently it's not! (I could be wrong though).

But I feel that, with Nicolas de Tavernost (current M6 boss) becoming the CEO of the new entity, most of what makes M6's identity will be kept. Their news bulletins have been hailed a success as counter-programming for those who don't like the "high mass" bulletins on TF1 and France 2.

I think, however, that M6's news staff could be merged with TF1/LCI (with some job cuts sadly) while keeping a different branding on-air.

A consortium led by Iliad owner Xavier Niel, Matthieu Pigasse, owner of Radio Nova (a French equivalent to BBC 6 Music) and left-leaning magazine Les Inrockuptibles, and producer Pierre-Antoine Capton, all three through Mediawan, as well as Czech raid investor Daniel Křetínský are interested on buying these channels.

The argument against removing the simulcast is that like the other three channels, they'll repeat their 11pm bulletin on a loop overnight, where as France 24 provides live bulletins through the night. France 24 is also a partner in the tv channel, so it's their contribution to the output on a daily basis. France 24 also provide a reporter who is on the Matinale news and co-produce a weekend filler show.

Likely in order to get the CSA to approve the merger. In an interview with franceinfo, the president of the Autorité de la Concurrence mentioned that the two groups control 70% of ad market share. Dumping the least watched channels would likely not be a very convincing case for the merger.

I wonder if warehousing would be a solution? Sell those multichannels to a friendly company, while the new company continues to programme them, but the warehouse company takes the ad revenue.
