I saw some clickbait today saying Katie Ricketts is leaving GMB to take up presenting Calendar next month?

I was expecting my hotel telly in Mansfield town centre to have EMT and Central East. Or, failing that, Look Leeds and Calendar North/West.

But I've actually got Look Hull and Calendar South/East. :?

It feels about as appropriate as getting Points West in Newport, or Tyne Tees in Penrith.

In parts of Notts, Belmont is stronger than Waltham. It's bad enough being in Leicester and having a stronger signal from Sutton Coldfield, so getting the West Midlands bulletins. I think Derby has similar issues as well?

Presumably, neither of the news programmes that I'm receiving would even remotely editorially include Mansfield news?

Look Levy does cover general East Midlands stories as Lincolnshire is in the East Midlands administrative region, so you may see stories about healthcare in Leicestershire as Lincs patients will be referred to hospitals in Leicester or Nottingham. I think Newark is under Look North Hull as well. The local commercial radio station that covers Newark is actually Lincs FM from Lincoln rather than those which used to originate from Nottingham before they went quasi-national from London/Birmingham.

Ironically it's possible to get EMT/Central East from Waltham in parts of Northamptonshire than in parts of their actual editorial area.

On Sky/Freesat, Mansfield (NG18) and Newark (NG22) are allocated BBC East Midlands and ITV Yorkshire East.

This kind of thing ruptures my Common Sense (and/or OCD) Gland.

Why the blithering flip would any given postcode not be allocated to the BBC/ITV regions that are the most direct equivalent of each other, FFS?!?!

I suspect that's a decision that ITV have made as the majority of viewers in Mansfield and Newark watch ITV Yorkshire from Belmont on Freeview.

ITV's postcode allocations on Sky/Freeview largely don't make sense. There are examples across the country which are considered strange. Tring in Hertfordshire gets ITV Meridian Thames Valley rather than ITV Anglia as it's closer to Aylesbury, yet the BBC allocated it to BBC One East - West (Cambridge). Parts of West Kent (Dartford, Gravesend, Swanley, Sevenoaks) along with a large part of East Surrey and Crawley/East Grinstead are allocated BBC One South East, while ITV stubbornly sticks with London, despite Meridian covering Crawley editorially on their news programmes, because the Reigate transmitter is a SFN with Crystal Palace.

The only one I can think of off the top of my head where ITV is allocated correctly is in the South Lakes where ITV Border England is on 103, while on 101 BBC One North West is allocated instead of BBC One North East and Cumbria.

Happened a lot in analogue days, the BBC and ITV regions weren't identical. There were a bunch of relay transmitters in the Todmorden area that carried either BBC North and Granada or BBC North West and Yorkshire

Marlborough used to be BBC West, and ITV Southern. That was quietly moved to HTV West in January 82. There was a slight plus about such relays sat on regional TV borders, that you could decide which direction to consume your news from
For ITV on satellite these days, their decisions will be more to do with advertising, rather than them just wanting to match their rival’s news regions, which are editorially more rigid.

When selling advertising, they will say that a region reaches a certain amount of viewers and charge varying prices depending on the region size and which towns will be reached, etc.

For example: Advertising-wise, it makes business sense to allocate well-off swathes of Surrey, Essex, Herts, etc, to ITV London (regardless of whether these areas are thoroughly covered on the London region’s news or not). From the ITV website (link below): “ITV London offers brands the unique opportunity to target affluent Londoners around the nation’s favourite shows”.

Mansfield and Newark in Nottinghamshire are in the East Midlands, geographically and politically. However, the decision of ITV allocating Yorkshire East to those areas on satellite is presumably beneficial to them as a business and to advertisers.

Katy Rickett presenting Calendar tonight for the first time and credited in the 6pm announcement along with Duncan.
And then Duncan introduced both of them, and then they put a name caption up, just so everyone knew who she is.

Three name checks rather than the usual one!
Highlights from Katy's first bulletin. She fits in well there and feels more friendly than Look North since Harry Gration left.
