Seem to recall on the day of Diana's death, Cartoon Network had a banner asking viewers to switch over to Sky News.

The banner on Cbeebies is probably for the parents' benefit.

I think the banner on Cartoon Network then was pointing viewers to CNN, not Sky. Not only are they owned by the same company but I don't think the CN was a Sky Multichannel subscription channel back then

But on your other point, yes it's obviously for the parents

I wonder if the broadcasters in the Commonwealth countries have an emergency wardrobe in case of a major death? the major news and breakfast programmes in Australia, Canada and New Zealand have all switched to black clothing.

Looks like Look East was the only English region with the sombre titles and customised with the headlines sting, a lot of the regions going for the main titles for the day and none at all in a few cases.

One thing I found odd was last night 6music took 5live. 6music is a music station and should be playing music

So are Radio 1, 1 Xtra, 1Dance, and Radios 2 and 3 but they carried the network coverage too.

I would agree that those stations stuck with it for too long but they alkng with 6 Music should definately have carried the coverage when it was announced

As someone who's right in 6 Music's demographic and listens to it occasionally it would have been a lot more acceptable to the average 6 listener than the average 1 Xtra listener

RE Canada, I didn’t notice what the national morning show anchors were wearing, but, the news broke when most stations were doing LOCAL morning news, and none of the ones I saw (CTV/Global) had wardrobe changes.

I think the Commonwealth countries can be forgiven as it was breaking news at 1210pm so the time to change likely wasn't possible.

CITV's Scrambled! has also changed the line up on the main channel with 2 extra episodes of Mr. Bean: The Animated Series after The Rubbish World of Dave Spud until 9:25 due to the news being on ITV.

Well the theory of BBC Four freeing up bandwidth must be out of the window if they can afford to broadcast the loop they're airing at the moment. I can understand BBC One going full obit (maybe not for as long as they plan to) but to take out Two, Four and News? Something isn't right. And as I type this they've reverted back to the grey slide on BBC Four.

It wasn't about freeing up bandwidth, it was that the statmuxing would be messed up with too many channels simulcasting the same content.

If you remember almost exactly 10 years ago, the then BBC HD channel closed for the day, so that BBC 1HD had maximum bandwidth for William and Kate's wedding. .

However, remember yesterday until 7pm (so for 7 hours) Cbeebies was on the air, which uses the same stream that BBC 4 uses after 7pm, so I don't understand why 4 had to shut. And as noted it carried a moving graphic pointing viewers to the Red Button for football.

Sorry, just nuts.

In my opinion BBC 2 should have just reverted to a static banner, but the Beeb have always been obsessesd about simulcasting. They do thousands of hours of it every year. It's squandering bandwidth really, but hey

I am waiting for the BBC Local Radio mid-morning/afternoon programmes to appear, if they ever do due to being truncated, so I can hear how naughty Kent, Sheffield and Stoke previewed the news themselves before being cut to Network.

I listened to a few while they were on live rewind, I think Sheffield took 5 Live early, who broke the news and had just started playing an obit package when they were yanked off air and joined Radio 4.

Isn't the issue that editorially BBC Four would need to be carrying the obit programming if it did go on air, and having BBC One, Two, Four, News, Scotland and Parliament all carrying the same programme on the same mux could have given the statmuxing a challenge?

It does seem ironic that Nick Witchell was constantly pointing out that HRH had said he wanted "no fuss" during blanket coverage on all outlets.

I think Toby is referring to 6 Music taking 5 Live overnight rather than the announcement and following coverage.

I may be wrong but I would imagine that having a simple animating slide requires a lot less bandwidth than a live football match with rapid camera movements and real time graphics
