Not surprised he's there as he's the chief Nat Sec Correspondent. If the attack is on Wednesday, I wonder if they will be tempted to try and fly Wolf or John Berman out there.

I would think that as well but when it came to Afghanistan, it was mostly US simulcasts when it escalated.

There was a time when CNN US would actually simulcast CNNI for big international stories, because it offered a more knowledgeable in-depth coverage. That was before CNN was Zuckerized.

I would not want international hosts to cover this crisis on CNN. Reporters, ok. But us viewers in the US know our domestic anchors, that is why we tune in, and I do not see why that should change. For CNNI, I can't judge.

And us viewers in Europe (where Russia and Ukraine are located and whose lives would be most affected!) wouldn't want a domestic US anchor telling us about the crisis.

However, I think I'm in the minority when I say I don't mind Erin Burnett. Liked her before she came to CNN before she was Zuckerised (thanks Ginnyfan!) and when not forcing US politics down our throats, I think she is alright.

But, to go back to the initial post, if this were twenty years ago, you'd have Hala Gorani, Fionnuala Sweeney, Christiane Amanpour, Arwa Damon et all giving proper coverage. Competent, non-sensationalised coverage. I'd use the Israel Gaza conflict as an example.

I think Michael Holmes is actually in Ukraine at the moment so there is that!

Each breaking news story is different and each correspondent and anchor has a different set of strengths. People who watch CNN will know who’s who and people who don’t won’t know the difference. Poppy Harlow anchored two hours of CNNI newsroom after the super bowl and no one batted an eyelid.

What I will say struck me as odd was seeing Matthew Chance do a live hit with Laura Coates right now (CNN Tonight, 9pm ET). Made me realize how little we see international correspondents in the US prime time.

I think that's every so slightly uncalled for. Sure it was Zucker's choice as to who he dispatched to cover big stories, but if you know anything about Burnett she is a very experienced journalist and has anchored from all over the world, often in war zones. The fact she's not had the chance to get from behind the desk in recent years is down to the now departed Sucker. The more woman CNN utilise in moments such as these the better.

Jeff Zucker, Allison Gollust, and Chris Cuomo broke news standards and practices according to investigation into Chris Cuomo. Gollust has also left CNN now as well. Chris also got in contact with his accuser to propose a positive segment about the company she ran.

I would also imagine that the "right" model might well depend on the market/country. From what we've heard so far, CNN+ is geared towards an American audience. It's not implausible that there could be an audience out there that's willing to pay for CNN+ in addition to, say, their existing HBO Max subscription (either as totally separate platforms, or bundled with a slight discount). But I can't see what would be particularly attractive to international audiences -- it might make more sense, at least initially, to distribute CNN+ content via HBO Max and/or Discovery without extra fees. Longer term, if there ambitions to build up CNN+ as a global platform -- with international content, and perhaps even as a (or the) distribution channel for CNN International -- then Warner/Discovery can always ratchet up the subscription price later. But first, you need to have an audience that's sampled the product and is willing to pay -- and I'm not convinced CNN is in that position yet (at least outside North America).
