In a new interview with Radio Times, [Andrew Neil] admitted the GB News teams will have a completely different way of “packaging the news”.

He went on to add that what they have learned from America, which is always ahead of Britain when it comes to presenting the news, is that “rolling news” doesn’t go down well with viewers.

“We won’t be doing rolling news, we won’t even be doing news bulletins,” the TV presenter confessed.

He continued: “The content we select will be chosen by the presenters and their editors.

“It won’t be just the style of the shows that will be different, I think the content will be different.”

Well, I guess the new channel is now positioned to be a place to hop into for opinion after one's done watching BBC/Sky bulletins.

For audience comparison, BBC News reaches 14,313 million viewers while Sky reaches 9,041 (latest figures). If all the hype for GB News is true then I'd expect both figures to tumble à la GMB.

I see nothing fundamently wrong with 'The Pool' giving GB News access to their footage.
However GBN has, and will have far far fewer resources than the other three, so won't be in the position to reciprocate on an equal basis, so in that respect it won't be a fair relationship.

I suppose the radio equivalent is LBC's access to live events etc, my understanding there is they use (and pay) Sky for audio feeds?

GB News may end up having to pay the pool, or teaming up with a similar 'LBC/Sky' style relationship with a third party news agency?

It sounds like a UK CNEWS and will likely prove to be a popular format. Anything talk-radio or the like will be much more watchable for longer periods of time than rolling news. A lot of people at home will just have the channel on in the background. Then in turn the channel's audience will be very dependent on things like the weather outside and other parameters like that. For instance CNEWS is a lot less popular on weekends in terms of audience share while BFMTV (rolling news) has more or less the same audience share weekday or weekend.

Interesting running order on the screen at the bottom. Looks like we will have weather updates (some had questioned whether we would). It also looks like frequent but short ad breaks are what they’re going with for now.

Would LBC not be getting those feeds through IRN? For all the Global's Newsroom branding they play the solus ads on their stations so I assume they subscribe to IRN content.

Interesting to see that name pop up, I think I'm right in saying he used to work closely with Chris Cook at the Beeb. They had a friendly rivalry going with lots of Twitter banter over the festive bulletin closing graphics, with one looking after Christmas Day and the other New Year's Eve and trying to outdo each other.

(I'm really not a Twitter stalker btw, my brain just seems to retain trivial things that I read in passing instead of the important stuff)

Not from what we've seen - there may be one in a corner of the studio not yet previewed but judging by rehearsal pics it appears as if they'll be using the sofas. I'd imagine (assuming there's no desk) that they'll use the breakfast bar for any big and serious breaking news, as that has a clear 'newsy' backdrop of the newsroom/gallery and looks like a desk, at least in the single presenter shot (which is all they really need for a big breaking story, I doubt they'd go to a huge wide and show the front of the bar which looks fairly informal). Of course I don't know anything for certain, this is just my speculation.

Global actually owns over half of IRN, for the likes of LBC it just supplements IRN with additional material it sources for itself.

Back to GB News - will it be looking at joining the pool and generating its share of the material, or is it just buying in news from the agencies?

A promo for the channel has appeared on the Virgin TiVo discovery bar. It's slightly oddly worded:

"GB News is a new channel. The channel will not provide rolling news, but instead is expected to be a mix of news, opinion, and debate."

I don't want to be aware of the political leaning of journalists, and I want them to be professional enough to leave their personal views aside. The BBC bends over backwards to placate both sides and maintain no signs of bias. (even when it offends my own political views)

The fact he felt the need to distance himself from a "leftie" BBC is a red flag to me. It is the stated aim of the channel by it's chairman and most well known face (Andrew Neil) to give voice to people with that view, and put forward one world view against another side.

I am on the left, and I am of an LGBT+ group, and I will never be able to view the output of this channel in a light which isn't "proudly" against people like me.

By my nature, I am a both sides kind of person. I will "angrily" listen to Nick Ferrari on LBC cursing the people he has on, and the way he audibly rustles his papers when someone he is dismissive of is talking on the air. And then listen to James O'Brien for my breath of fresh air "at least someone is sensible and right".

I don't view LBC as biased, only the individual personalities. But I listen to try to understand the arguments that are used against people like myself.

GB News appears to be making no effort at all to be a plurality of views and voices. Which immediately makes me feel dismissive of the whole endeavour and everyone involved. And I was hopeful there may be some balance, because I am curious - being a Londoner - what this supposedly ignored other part of the country has to say. (not just the right wingers who have IMO made this country, heck this world, an unpleasant place to live in since Brexit, and Austerity, and Trump.)

An absolute joke you were warned for this post and a real shame the views of so many long term respected members of this community have been silenced for simply having an opinion which questions the motives and actions behind the launch of a new channel.

It was a post in response to information that suggests of the weekday schedule at least 12 out of 18 hours will be led by pro-Brexit journalists. That won't matter if they are professional and politically neutral both on air and in any content connected to GB News but the lead up to the launch and stated mission to be "positive" about Britain's future, at a time when the fallout both from Brexit and the pandemic is still to be determined, suggests the argument the channel won't be is not without foundation.

The "Thou Shalt Not Question GB News" attitude of the moderation has been far more damaging to the forum than the so called "political" posts of respected people like mdta who is just calling it how he sees it. That is exactly the sort of post this forum should be encouraging- considered, thoughtful and insightful with the poster unafraid to admit their opinion is formed, and therefore may be swayed, by their view of society. It is one of the best posts I've seen on here since the forum launched and it is a shame what is now clearly a biased framework for moderation condemns it.

I am on the left, and I am of an LGBT+ group, and I will never be able to view the output of this channel in a light which isn't "proudly" against people like me.

I very much doubt any TV channel that is anti LGBT+ is going to launch in Britain in 2021, there is nothing to suggest this will be the case.

I wish that were guaranteed, however the Trans community has become a target for many, and many are living in fear in this country due to it. Whilst I am Gay, not Trans - I recognise a tide turning against the more progressive strides that had been making things better.

I think it is unfair on our society to say there has been a tide turning against a minority group. Britain in general goes out of its way to make people feel accepted. I think what is actually happening, isn't so much a tide turning against anyone, but it is a case that certain organisations, who claim to represent minorities, are pushing for changes to society that many are uncomfortable with. At times these pushes to change society seem militant in thinking, dealing only in absolutes. It is this method which created the "woke" and which GB news will claim to monitor with shows like woke watch.

The latest example was recently when the boss of a certain charity came and claimed anyone who held a belief there were two sexes was a bigot. She did not say if you want to prevent people living as whoever they wish to you are a bigot, she said just to believe there are two sexes means you should be cast out. To many this wasn't something they could go along with. BBC News invited a spokesperson onto radio 4 and was subsequently accused of being transphobic. In this instance I am pretty sure radio 4 and GB News would have had the same discussion and had the same criticism. But radio 4 and GB news are seen as very different in terms of ideology.

With this in mind I don't believe GB News will any be any different to the current broadcasters, it will certainly be the one to challenge such thinking, and many people in society will want it to challenge such ideology.That doesn't mean it is against anyone. I think people have to be realistic on society. Just to add although it should not matter, it has been mentioned as a factor, I am a gay person and I am right wing and want to watch GB News. Just because you are in a minority does not mean you all think the same, or by default support these organisations that claim to be there to help you. I think in recent years many organisations have lost the plot a bit, trying to stay relevant by beginning to support ever increasingly out of scope policy. It is certainly a discussion to be had more but perhaps on metropol247 if you wish to. It has gone beyond the prism of forcing society to change for the good, and it being uncomfortable is surely a sign of good change is no longer the situation.
