BBC (Miscellaneous): 2021 Rebrand

The loss of the current BBC Scotland logo, and especially the relatively short-lived current Radio Scotland logo, for this very bland one seems like a real backwards step. A distinctive look for the nations to give their services a sense of identity seems important.

The three diagonal lines first appeared in the late 80s and disappeared for some time after the 1997 rebrand before re-emerging. Maybe they’ll return again one day!

I think that this is the most major loss from the rebrand. The BBC Radio Scotland icon could so easily have worked with the new branding system, as it is in itself three blocks. But I suppose if they were to use an icon for Scotland, they'd have to find a way of doing one for Wales and NI too.

New BBC America logo appeared for the first time in Doctor Who: Legend of the Sea Devils. It had been similarities to 2021 logo but in Reith font instead Gill Sans. Not sure whether new logo appears on-air.

It looks a little like they’re spelling “America” with a double “r”, which is a currious bit of design.

I had a look at bbc America they updated the trailers and the overlays but not the dog itself which is strange because when they show a programme overlay it’s in the same position as the dog but with the new bbc logo.

It’s only the second international channel after bbc select to use the new bbc logo.

With respect, that’s not a great use of your time. Might I suggest you do something else, and let the app update when it updates?

I would assume that the new app update for BBC News for other people's phones & tablets should be here by Monday. That would be the day the new BBC blocks will appear in Reith for all BBC News bulletins including those on World.

I did receive another update for the BBC News app from the Google Play store today to improve the targeted ads in it. However the app still has the old UI in it for me.

The logo of the newly launched BBC photosales website seemingly proving that there is no rule in the new system as to what size the brand text should be. The 'Photo Archive' is far, far too small, although I think I prefer the tiny text to the way too large 'Three', 'Four' and 'Scotland'.



As for the website itself, nowhere near as comprehensive as I would've imagined. I assume this is partly down to it being a new system and there being many undigitised photos, but a hell of a lot of gaps.

This seems to be an outlier as the rest of the logos follow a standard system of text just slightly smaller in height than the BBC blocks that sits to the right. The text can also sit centred under the blocks and be stacked.

For the channel logos they've decided to increase the size of the text no doubt to make the channel name stand out. Again following the system the text can either be stacked or sit to the right of the blocks.

I've thought about this for a bit:

A sonic identity is good - but I think a leitmotif would be better.

"a recurrent theme throughout a musical or literary composition, associated with a particular person, idea, or situation."

One that could be injected into the existing idents, news packages and the likes
