Faisal Islam is an interesting possibility (who I’d forgotten about until I saw his name on the list). He was good at Sky and has been pretty good at the Beeb (although has probably written enough stuff that could be perceived as ‘anti-government’ during his time in economics that it could be a tricky appointment.

I do wonder though if looking at the role overall could make sense? Maybe splitting it into a Westminster Editor who is focused on day-to-day reporting and scoop getting around Parliament and the UK government and a Political Editor who takes more of a UK-wide view (so is plugged into the devolved assemblies) and does longer-form stuff.

I suspect who ever is appointed will see reports of people unhappy for some reason or another. It’s just the way things are atm. Nick Robinson was reported to have to have become disliked by Tony Blair while he was at ITV and has now according to reports today apparently fallen out with Boris Johnson and Nadine Dories.

That's a good shout actually and I think a promotion from within is most likely. They're going to get attacked whatever they do but Faisal is far more known for his journalism than his views and any candidate, including those seen as favourable to the government, is going to have a few "anti-government" reports in their portfolio. They'll also have a few "anti-Labour" ones too.

That's a good shout actually and I think a promotion from within is most likely. Gudio Fawkes have attacked Faisal quite a few times so I suspect he would be a very risky choice in a climate that is seeing respected reports that BBC funding will be cut due to one Nick Robinson interview

Anyone they pick will be controversial in some way to some people. Maybe people need to stop being so irate about everything instead. I don’t know.

Unfortunately I suspect the BBC management will if possible want to avoid a conflict with the Government. They would never rightly admit to taking that into account but it’s the situation they face themselves in,

Has anyone been watching the Blair and Brown programme on BBC Two (available to watch now on the BBC iPlayer )

As well as a history of that era in politics, it also served as a potted history of BBC News with lots of news clips and clips from election night coverage

First episode based in the latter days of the Major government had clips of the likes of Sissons and Buerk in the blue virtual set, then you gradually got through the early red/cream era, and eventually into the Barco TVC era.

Lots of clips of today’s presenters in their younger days, Sophie Raworth, Fiona Bruce, Susanna Reid hosting Breakfast with Dermot, Louise Minchin with Jon Sopel on BBC News 24. It’s worth a watch
