They scream temporary / backup to me. I caught the weather to the end of the West Country (South West) programme and they used the usual name graphic for the weatherman Charlie Powell.

Perhaps there was a technical issue when they were putting the reports together, and somebody quickly put together this 'new' style of graphic.

On the West edition (which they call West Country East), I think all but two reports used the temporary astons. South West reports all used this template, while studio content on both sub-opt bulletins was normal.

Spot on. Major problems with the hardware!

Any astons already in the running order before the system crashed would play fine, but anything after that wouldn't, so we had to hastily make our own on a very basic system. Could be the same tomorrow!

The Uffington White Horse in SW Oxfordshire would be good, as it's towards the Swindon corner of the sub-region.

I thought that did feature in the titles of either West Country Bristol or one of the Meridian Titles.

Remember that there is more than one chalk-white-horse-on-a-hillside in this country.

There is no reason why the Uffington (Oxfordshire) white horse would be in the West Country titles, as it well-and-truly isn't in the west country. West Country (East) titles do feature the Westbury (Wiltshire) white horse.

Look for them both on Google Images, they do not look the same. Westbury horse has head on the left, tail on the right, and is a single solid white shape. Uffington horse has tail on the left, head to the right, and is a series of whispy lines forming an incomplete "outline" suggestion of a horse shape.

I'm sure that the Uffington horse featured in the teal Thames Valley Today/Tonight titles. Not sure if it had featured in the preceding teal Central News (South) titles. It definitely didn't survive into the subsequent era when the enlarged Meridian West area lacked any surviving Thames Valley/South split for about 5 years.

Thank You for clearing this up. I remember seeing a White Horse on a hill coming back from Bournemouth in 1988. I thought there was only one. Unsure which one it would be. I was thinking either Salisbury or Somerset but could be wrong.

Thank you for the explainer. You did a good job with the temp astons. Still on brand, with the Reem font and a dash of teal, too. Hopefully the hardware issues don't plague you for too much longer.

I think those straps look pretty nice all things considered! Not entirely sure why but it unlocked a memory from a decade or so ago when Look North had some issues during a NUJ strike that affected the captions they were putting on air.

I was attempting to run a presentation site at the time (now long forgotten) and remembered that I had a special page of strike coverage at the time, and have somehow managed to dig the original capture out of the archive - it's not quite as polished as the efforts from ITV West Country...

With the incident tonight in Plymouth, I won't be surprised if Spotlight and ITV News West Country are live from the scene for tomorrow's 6.

I suspect they'll send Kylie Pentelow down to present a split bulletin on the West Country West opt, while the East bulletin is from the Bristol studio with whoever is on duty that day.

This is where the current system of regional opt outs fails the regions.

Editorially, there was plenty of justification for extended coverage last night. The late bulletins really should have been extended to provide the level of coverage this story really deserved. There were breaking developments in the story past midnight, which is incredibly unusual. But neither ITV or BBC did that.

And again today, there's plenty of justification for extending the regional output today, but ITV won't do it. BBC could, Spotlight could be extended to replace the One Show, but arguably there's more justification for doing an extended lunchtime bulletin as well, but again, because of the tightness of the schedule post the lunchtime news, they won't do that.

Local radio in this case is only marginally better. Only BBC could really provide the coverage this story deserved, whilst both Heart and Greatest Hits Radio were in network mode all night. Local commercial radio here failed the local area.

I’ve just been to the co op near by and the shock on people’s faces and all talking about, you can see the shocked and sadness of it off, I would of thought that bbc spotlight can hopefully do an extended lunchtime version as you can see people all around the area are shocked? BBC Radio Devon have dropped their normal programme so they can cover it more than normal

so bbc spotlight should be able to jump into bbc one and take over, the bbc south west team are excellent. I like to say the same for itv, I dunno if this morning have covered it but as Ruth was a local girl I hope they did
