The 7pm Emmerdale viewers don't want 30 minutes of news. So it will gift The One Show a rather nice boost and to dominate in early peak, or EE if it gets moved there.
The only welcome thing is the end to those split Corrie episodes, but even then I feel kind of sad that they are moving it from 7.30pm where it has been like since forever.

It’ll be interesting to see whether the expanded Evening News (and the changes to the scheduling of Emmerdale & Coronation Street) improves ITV’s ratings or if The One Show will benefit from traditional 7pm ITV viewers switching over not watching to watch a 1 hour national bulletin.
On one hand, I can understand the logic behind the move because it reduces the amount of ‘filler’ programming (ie; pre-9pm non-soap) which needs to be commissioned/aired. However, can’t help but think that a one hour Evening News will be treading on News at Ten's territory considering ITN over the last few years has molded it into a really solid destination for extended features/analysis of the day's top stories.
Looks like Emmerdale will be reduced to five half slots rather than six (losing the two half hour lots on a Thursday).
The jury is out on the extended news but I'll wait and see - the only thing I will bring up is the choice of main anchor.
Mary Nightingale is an exceptional broadcaster and news anchor however (please don't slate me for this!) - I must admit over the last few years I've always been on edge watching her read bulletins - her voice is often trembly and shaken, remember the mad coughing fit she had? - she often looks on edge as if she is worried she won't make it until the end of story before coughing and spluttering. I hope there is nothing seriously wrong but I worry how she will cope on her own for an hour - maybe ITV should have considered a double header.
Just my thoughts - nothing personal - I can't praise Mary enough I just feel on edge watching her and as soon as the voice breaks you can literally see the panic in her eyes as well.
I'm interested to see what the knock on effect will be for shows that use up the 8:00 - 9:00 slot (e.g. Martin Lewis Money Show, Love Your Garden). There isn't really any other place that they can put those programmes.

I think making the schedules more consistent would be far better:
6:00 - Regional News
6:30 - Evening News
7:00 - Emmerdale
7:30 - Coronation Street
8:00 - Tonight/All Around Britain/Peston/Martin Lewis
8:30/9:00 - Main evening programme(s)
10:00 - News at Ten
10:45 - Regional Late News
Having the evening split into hours like that Monday-Saturday would really work in my opinion.
Especially considering the fact that ITV's weekend news is not at a consistent time or length.
Presumably an hour long bulletin will see Tonight merged and become a special report or similar.

I think Emmerdale's second Thursday episode is going to roll into the first to become an hour long from 7:30pm, as the press release mentions STV's opt-out 'Scotland Tonight' will move to 8:30pm (unless, of course, it means there may be another half-hour programme going at 8pm instead, say comedy Kate & Koji, as the Corrie sandwich will no longer be there for it like last series when it returns, probably in the autumn).
Agree re: Mary - and I hate to say it - but maybe a return to a double-headed news bulletin might be better to take some of the pressure off her.
I can see Mary becoming the senior anchor in a double act with say Kylie Pentelow or Duncan Golestani. She's certainly earned it.

I'd be surprised if there wasn't a rebrand to coincide with the changes.
Quoting the increase share though for 2020 and 2021 as reasoning for the changes though suggests perhaps a false confidence - there are obvious reasons virtually all news bulletins have seen increased ratings over the last couple of years. I think though Paul Brand's reporting in recent months, and to be fair in the couple of years before that though along with others in the political team, noteably Daniel Hewitt, has really increased the respect ITV News has for breaking stories and more investigative reporting.
Indeed whilst I agree they should return it to a double headed format with the expansion to an hour I wonder if it is worth trying the likes of Paul and Daniel in the presenters chair, off peak of course. Geraint Vincent seems to be back presenting semi-regularly after a decade or so mainly out of the studio, whilst Chris Ship is probably the most frequent of the male reporters to get a go in the chair. Always thought bringing Charlie Stayt back to ITN as an Evening News co-host would be a good move for both too.
