Which makes it all the worse that it looks just "alright".

This seems like a good time to repost the mock from Television Forum of the blocks.

Ahh yes, ‘The Reith Switcheroo‘ as I like to nickname that mock. I do prefer that version but I’m guessing they wanted to make it just a little bit different to what we currently have now hence the spacing change and lettering size. It was certainly going to cause a stir when we’re all used to the 1997 one now.

The "Reith Switcheroo" (I'm calling it that from now on) is ultimately too similar and the old version would constantly be used by mistake by less observant programme makers and designers. A large swathe of Joe Public also wouldn't notice the change, and there'd be (faux) outrage when the amount of money used to rebrand the BBC was revealed and reported on the front page of the Daily Fail as "£__ MILLION TO CHANGE A FONT" shocker. So I can see why they're doing something more drastic to it. It's just unfortunate that it's ended up looking like a cheap mock, probably not helped by the back door way it's first been used.

If they were going to change it up completely, part of me wishes they'd just gone all out with something really brave and new. This feels like a compromise - changed just enough to make it different, but not enough that it brings anything new to the table.

I can't wait for them to phase out the stupid Oneness idents, I'm telling you!
It would be good to see some new BBC Four idents as well.

Hoping BBC One will go back to using a symbol like that of Two with their curve.
Some non live action idents would be nice

To me this is such a huge step backwards. The type size and spacing is not as good as the current logo, and it does just look like a pale imitation you would see in the Gallery. Such a waste of money I have to say

On the bbc select desktop site, the top left logo is more difficult to make out compared to the old one. The letters are too small.

And cue the inevitable Mail Online article (which appears to be Clean Feed telling The Sun):

The interesting bit is perhaps the BBC spokesman part...
Quote:A spokesman for the BBC denied the cost of the new logo was 'significant'.

In a statement, they said: 'We are using our own font — which we own the intellectual rights to — when we update content or BBC products.

'It would be wrong to suggest the costs of the design of the blocks was significant.'

I'm not angry, I'm just disappointed. Disappointed that there is anybody within the BBC who seriously thinks this is a good idea. Replacing one of the best pieces of corporate design of recent times with a cheap knock off redolent of a 1* mock from The Gallery.

When TfL have updated the London Underground roundel - another great piece of British corporate design - they have always taken great care and attention to ensure that the proportions remain correct and the typography works both for modern mediums and adheres to the Johnston tradition. This is nothing like that. The equivalent would be somebody at TfL opening PowerPoint, drawing two random circles and a bar and writing - off-centre - 'UndeRGrOund' in Calibri, and TfL then adopting that as their new corporate brand.

This is going to be an expensive roll out and for what? What is the point here. Replacing a near-perfect MLN-designed logo, with a logo equivalent of those quick, knock-up job TV news graphics you get in dramas. I'm sure that all those BBC employees who have been made redundant over the last few years are going to feel pretty p*ssed off that they could find money for this abomination but not for anything worthwhile. Might as well place several millions pounds in cash on the World Plaza and set it alight - at least then the flames might be pleasing to the eye.

Well I think it's a vast improvement.

Love it. It's just missing "Tom's" above the bar and "netOwork" below it.

Can this new logo be imagined on the front of BBC HQ, or in the event of a royal death. It seems to weak in comparison to the current one. Maybe they will keep the old one in certain areas....

It will be a overnight overhaul, around-about spooky season ;-) Flick of a switch kind of a thing and everything will change. It’s gonna be a mammoth effort, but when replacing the main corporate logo which is plastered everywhere, it needs to be done quickly and not drip fed.

Didn't realise he designed the font - always thought it was just named after him. Would Microsoft withdraw Arial or Calibri in similar circumstances - I suspect not.

I've no problem with them updating the lettering in the boxes to Reith but it should be at the same scale. I can't see the logic at all in what they've done considering nowadays the logo is usually seen at a pretty small size on avatars and icons etc., so the smaller font makes even less sense. I certainly doubt it'll last anything close to 24 years unless they see sense before formally launching it and change the size of the text.

Good to see the TVF tradition of hyperbole has made it over here ? I mean… questioning whether a logo with slightly smaller letters is suitable for a royal death is certainly an interesting take.

I hope there’s more going on that just a like for like replacement. Long thought that the BBC could do with a short sting before programmes (like the Netflix one), especially given prominence is now given to iPlayer over channel identity in many cases. The logical next step is almost to do away with individual channel identities completely. Suppose it depends how radical they go.

I can see the logic of revising the logo - now that Reith is the BBC's typeface, it makes sense that it should also feature in the BBC's logo. Core to the logo's identity is the three blocks, not Gill Sans. The change is akin to ABC (US) tweaking their logo - still the rounded letters in a circle, but styled slightly differently.

That said... I am sceptical about making the characters in the blocks smaller. As others have noted, it makes the text harder to read in smaller applications of the logo - for example, in social media avatars/icons. But maybe the BBC brand is so strong that even unreadable white blobs in three small black boxes is enough for people to recognise it.

As to whether the change is an improvement or not in a purely aesthetic sense, I'll hold my fire. I suspect the logo looks a bit strange today simply because it is slightly different to the existing logo. But in 10 years time, it may well be the "old" logo that ends up looking outdated. The real test will be how the new logo is used - that is, what direction the branding goes in.

I thought this to start with, but actually the longevity and really the success of the current logo is down to the fact that it doesn't matter what direction the branding goes in - it's timeless, stylish and works regardless of what's around it. IMO the new logo has already come up short on that.

So I totally agree the context of the branding will be a test for this new logo, but I don't think that should need to be the case.
