I'd not been aware of that! There is no technical reason why they couldn't, so it must be an editorial decision?
Maybe they didn't want listeners to think that there may be a thunderstorm near them, or listening over short wave it may not have sounded good at all with the fading also going on?

I wonder if it’s an internal feed or an actual TV thats therefore got the entire broadcast chain?

It won't be an actual TV recieving off-air, everything will either be fed directly from the router or via the IP ringmain.

The latter will be the case for a TV in a desk, I don't know what the delay through the ringmain is but I suspect it's that causing the 2 second delay. If it was off-air it would be longer as the ringmain would add some delay in top of the round trip.There are off-air versions available on the ringmain though.

Also notice the 12-frame delay between the camera and the multiview wall in the gallery - looks like an RF camera hence the more sizable delay.

Except I was aware that digital TV has a 7 delay, for example by my clock, when the time on BBC news changes to say 10:21 it will be 10:21:07 by iPhone time actually changes

Aren't most gallery monitor stacks multiviewers these days? Does that delay make life difficult for the director/vision mixer?

It makes it more difficult for sound rather than vision or the director.
That is why the monitor in sound is not a multi viewer, not is the main transmission or preview monitor in the gallery.

Yes, the sound PCRs were the last areas to still have CRTs. Even now they will often have a low latancy dedicated flat screen

One thing to mention about GTS (if it hasn’t been mentioned already) is that the final pip was the same length as the others until UTC was introduced in the seventies. This was because if a leap second was introduced there would be 7 pips. This happened last about 5 years. Presumably if there was ever a negative leap second there would be 5 pips.

The last time this happened was at the new year in 2016/2017. This meant the last second of the year was 23:59:60 rather than 23:59:59

Previous to that it was at the end of the day on June 30th 2015, but due to BST this was 00:59:60
On July 1st in the UK.

The next time it could happen is the end of this year.

I don't think the longer pip introduction had anything to do with UTC adoption, it was simply to clarify the final pip ?
1972, (possibly Jan 1st ?) I remember ITN mentioning it on the day, (one of those things that sticks in the mind !)

The longer pip was because of the introduction of leap seconds, which I think is the main difference between GMT and UTC.

There needed to be a way to distinguish between pip 6 of 6 or pip 6 of 7 so the last pip is the longer

I have always wondered what they use for distribution at GHR?

I flicked between 105.8 and 96.4 (we can get both here in Surrey however 105.8 is stronger) and noticed there was several seconds delay on 96.4.
