Would have been good if Epic Gameshow had mixed it up more and had the likes of Blockbusters. I accept it's a Fremantle showing off their portfolio thing but viewers couldn't care less about that.

It does surprise me that they didn't have Sale of the Century as an Epic Gameshow considering it's a Fremantle format.

Blockbusters I suspect is quite difficult to supersize.

But so is Supermarket Sweep and Family Fortunes.  Outside of Love Island and a few of the comedy commissions ITV2 clearly targets an older audience now.

I thought ITV stopped doing comedy and told us to watch Coronation Street for that?

Yeah, you have the main game with single letters to pick for single word answers. And the Gold Run with two or three word answers (for example you could pick CS on the board, and the answer turns out to be Coronation Street). How you make a new epic finale beyond the Gold Run? The same structure but with a bigger board than the original 5x4?

They'd also need to somehow rig it so that a fixed number of games are played, they'd just play until the time runs out and then continue on the next episode, so most episodes didn't end cleanly on a Gold Run.

Well they generally fill the hour by having two heats so it would be easy enough to do it that way with effectively three games and a Gold Run in the episode and then edit to fit the hour accordingly.

Not all the shows have had a new "epic endgame" - The Price is Right just had the showcase for example. They'd probably just stretch it out though from being crossing the board in a minute against the clock to stopping everytime they get a correct answer and gambling about going on.

There was an editing issue last night during the prize board round where they must have recorded Alan's joke again after the round then slotted it in after the first 3 darts so after 3 darts you knew they had only won Prize 8 in the remaining 6 darts!

Gameshow Marathon was faithful to the originals though. No modernised graphics or "epic" finale. It's telling how several shows were revived on the back of that, but none have been because of Epic Gameshow yet.

In the most recent revival with Dara O'Briain, they changed it so contestants didn't continue onto the next episode by adding in the Hexagon Standoff round which if there was a tie, decided who went through to the Gold Run.

As mentioned before, partly because they could keep the momentum going by having different celebs each week. I think people would get bored easily if a series of even what is considered the best for Alan was commissioned.

That’s because that was the format initially commissioned to celebrate ITV’s 50th anniversary. Epic Gameshow doesn’t have that historical element.

Not really a "game show" I suppose but I noticed Channel 5 have now managed to sign Paul Martin up for an antique show that sounds a bit like what you would get if you mashed up Antiques Road Trip and Flog It!

In fairness still no idea why the BBC axed Flog It in the first place yet continue to loop the repeats as it obviously does the numbers for them still!

Think you've answered your own question there, though adding 30 or so new episodes a year could probably extend repeats another decade without getting old.


As for this format - sounds like something that might go in the 6pm hour.
