The issue with the new newsroom background came clear this morning when it was used 6-10am, it obviously is set to be the newsroom at night with the blue lights but that does not make sense at 8 o’clock in the morning. Surely they made a version without the blue light effect. Or they could have just used the beautiful London backdrop that world normally uses.

I doubt they’ve made a daytime version as normally it would only be used for 2 hours on a Sunday morning. World London backdrop would’ve been much more suitable.

Any kind of London based backdrop is obviously banned on the NC, apart from overnight when no one is watching, and of course apart from 9 - 10pm Mon-Thurs, which is a backdrop that literally screams London at you.
So the banning of the subtle London skyline World daytime backdrop on the NC makes no sense.

The daytime London one is also used between 5-6am on the news channel during the week so maybe it’ll be used when we start the new week.

Without turning this into a rota thread, I’m currently at my mums who watches the BBC news almost every day.

So far she has said ‘who is this person’ when the presenter came on and ‘another one I don’t know’ when the reporter was in the studio.

Are the BBC short staffed at the moment or is this normal for the summer?

Think it's normal to have presenters like Thomas who are normally exclusive to World do News Channel shifts in the Summer but don't think normal for them to do an evening Network bulletin so probably a Pingdemic thing adding to normal Summer shortage of staff. Maybe she was on World and brought over as the news channel presenter Shaun couldn't prepare for a bulletin while presenting.

I think it's far from normal, most certainly to do with Pingdemic than summer holidays. Thomas has been with the BBC for decades. Pretty much like Annita McVeigh, she was a Special Correspondent before moving to World exclusively. I do know that it used to be the case that those on World contracts (Commercial channel) could not appear on the BBC, though as we all know that has changed in recent years.

She's clearly very excited and happy about it as her Twitter shows. She also points out it was a surprise to her as well as someone's Mum.

I'd love to see more cross channel pres appearances and hope this becomes the norm.

Indeed - I've just tweeted Philippa and she replied straight away saying she didn't know until this week she's be doing it - obviously due to Pingdemic. Nice lady.

Are the introductions to stories or the questions asked to the correspondents really THAT different between the News Channel and network bulletins to need to bring in a separate presenter?

For many years she presented the 7pm bulletins on BBC Four and before that network bulletins on BBC America and PBS in the mid-2000

Just to note, it appears the network bulletins are not broadcast on BBC World News. Shaun Ley is currently hosting on the Channel, likewise Tim Wilcox hosted during the 12pm bulletin...

Recently BBC 1 bulletins haven't always been broadcast on the NC, E.g. during the Euros, World News America was shown on the NC instead of the Ten if BBC 1 had the evening match, and last night the NC stayed with the World simulcast from C at 10pm, although World only took the first 10 mins of the simulcast anyway.

Up until this year, the BBC 1 network bulletin always seemed to go out on the NC regardless, even if the timing for the NC was inconvenient (e.g. straddling the top or bottom of the hour) so simulcasting with World does have its advantages for the NC.
