Erm, I think you'll find that BBC Three and BBC Four DID have live continuity, BBC Four dropped live continuity earlier this year tho.

That's news to me, it's been pre-recorded from as long as I remember

I’m sure the original continuity was live, along with the live generated sound-responsive idents.

Four has always been recorded for years, at least the last decade but probably longer. Three was recorded the vast majority of the time but had the ocassional live night, usually to include viewer comments and that sort of thing.

From memory, the live sound responsive idents we're fed a feed from the minidisc player that had all the announcements on it. There'd be two discs... one with generic announcements and one with specifics for the day. You had to make sure the correct disc was in the machine at the right time as the automation cued the track number and set the machine to play at the correct moment.

Thanks for the clarification and your insight. Smile

I love the purple splash of colour BBC Four has now received. It has certainly added a bit of personality!

If I’m honest, I’m a little disappointed that after 16 years the idents couldn’t have been changed up with a new concept. I appreciate there isn’t a bottomless pit of budget for this kind of thing these days but that really would have revitalised the channel.

Indeed, something like a modern version of the original launch idents, something quite abstract and arty would suit the channel - these just look like a piece of 4K footage that’s just had a filter dropped on it in final cut, and that’s more or less it.
trust me, I'm a lobster.

Well looking at the first programme tonight (the Cycling) they have toned the brightness of the DOG down. Still absolutely massive though

It’s also been moved to the right. (Unless that’s happened before the rebrand on sports programmes)

The top right is normal on sports programmes on BBC Four. Though it can depend on where other graphics are particularly if they're taking a world feed of something where the graphics are beyond their control.

Actually now its gone back top left it looks as bright as it did yesterday, although in fairness they are showing a film (the original Poltergeist film, not the crappy remake) and the DOG is on the black bars, so there's nothing for it to blend into.

Welp - BBC Four's been fading to black between promos and ident.

Everything is ruined. Big Grin

EDIT: Hey, the fade's gone now! Carry on.

That logo is still far too big and bright... I really hope they see sense and restore it to its previous size and opacity or something very similar to it.
