Virtual audiences.

Obviously I know the reasons why programmes haven't been able to have a proper audience in the studio. But do we really need to see a grid of people with terrible Internet connections whooping and gurning into their low-res webcams instead?

Ironically, there's one show that could really have used that but hasn't - Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. I wonder if they couldn't get Ask the Audience working remotely?

One pet peeve I noticed recently on ITV Nightscreen of all places was listing Saturday's regional news as 'Local Programming'. Why not just put regional news??

Speaking of ITV Nightscreen. They've never bothered updating the design which was made in 2005. They do update it every now and then but it's the same design for the last 16 years. I honestly think they need a revamp like as soon as possible.

Agreed, all they've ever done is update the colour scheme after the ITV corporate logo changed (was blue and yellow originally, then black and yellow, and then they changed the yellow to another colour?). At the very least, it should be using Reem.

Is it still true that different music is played to each region, so it counts as “regional content/variation”? Crazy as it sounds, at one point I believe that was the case.

I believe it's magenta these days, if I recall correctly.

ITV Nightscreen reminds me of how E4 do not even dedicate a programme block to show they're off air - they'll stick in a bland message during a programme saying "E4 will return at 6am." Which subsequently extends the programmes running time.

I wonder if, in that case, "local programming" may just be a legacy from when ITV did do non-news & current affiars regional programmes more widely (I know they do a programme for Border, and possibly some stuff for Wales?)

It's basically the equivalent of Pages from Ceefax. Cheap and easy and they're technically still on air. Apart from the probably minimal costs of licencing the music, whereas there'd be some costs assosiated somewhere else with programming of some sort.

Seems to me there’s people in this thread who are unfamiliar with the concept of ages and personality and accents.



Although I do appreciate that these things can sometimes be very visceral.
