Get Ready for ITV 1989 - the distribution

The early endboards for those promos does give me a sort of idea about what the 89 networked branding would have potentially looked like a decade on had they kept evolving it. Couple of modifications to keep the regions happy and it could have had a long healthy life I think.

There were networked promos in the early years after the 1989 revamp and they were used by most regions for a couple of years, but they slowly drifted out of use, particularly after the 1993 franchise change. None of the new companies used them, and I think Thames were actually responsible for making many of them as well.

Yorkshire definitely had ITV branded trails in the early to mid 90's because I remember visiting my grandparents in Mansfield and noticing this, whereas Central, my region, was always locally-branded.

This was when they still had the modded 1989 ident with the chevron flying out at the end.

Yes - I think the point is these generic ITV trails didn’t use the 1989 font and often not even the stylised “ITV” - they were just made in the style the originating company chose.

That’s right I remember Central had their distinctive font on central and networked trailers, you could tell when LWT were doing it etc, so it was all followed pretty loosely, does make you wonder how the whole 1989 itv look was agreed as clearly no region seemed to embrace it

The modded YTV ident didn’t even use the original itv font for whatever reasons, so the text always looked too lower down for me as well as the wrong font.

Sad as it may sound I even went frame to frame with a video recorder to see how YTV would have made the edit back to the chevron.

The first time I was even aware of the generic ITV logo was on a trip to relatives in Lincolnshire. This was 1991 and I thought the modded version was weird. When I later saw the Border TV version it made more sense.

Yorkshire could have modded it better if they’d kept the full generic ident form up but then had the chevron grow out of the section that you see in the triangle of the ITV logo. Some day I’ll edit it to show what I mean.

  • The preschool slot moved from 12:10 to 15:30.
  • Families was axed and repeats of Enmerdale/Corrie came in.
  • Home & Away was given a networked lunchtime slot.
  • I believe it's at this point CITV went out-of-vision, though I may be wrong.

As well as Families, Take the High Road was also axed by ITV but STV carried on making one episode a week (it was 2 afternoons a week like Families when it was networked) as a regional programme and the majority of ITV regions showed it at their own pace apart from YTV/TTTV I think. Eventually everyone apart from Central, Westcountry and the Scottish regions dropped it

HTV Cymru Wales/HTV West ran with the 1989 look until December 1992. All idents were their own version of the ITV ident with the full ITV ident used mainly before national news. In Vision announcing was also dropped after Dec 1992 in Wales, think it carried on for a while into 1993 on HTV West but i was never sure why that happened.

Yes, I looked too, and you can just start to see the edit/wipe point where the original abstract design starts to reveal!
