As I’m battling Covid again, I’ve been catching up with vintage Corrie on YouTube from 1976 onwards over the last few weeks.
And it’s surprising how weak 1982 really was and apart from Ken and Deirdre 1983 isn’t shaping up much better. Seems the Golden era was over by 1981 before picking up post 1985. It just feels like a programme going through the motions.

I seem to remember that they lost quite a few long-term - even original - members of the cast around 1983-84 for various reasons. Annie, Elsie, Albert, Stan, Eddie, Marian and Len for example. It was, whether intended or not, something of a transition period.
One of the bigger storylines I remember from this era was Gail and Brian’s separation and reconciliation in 1985 - didn’t she have an affair (perhaps while estranged from Brian) and have to choose between the two men, similar to Deirdre a couple of years earlier? Not as iconic a story, but one the press appeared to report on thoroughly. Of course, Stan’s death in itself gave us that incredible performance from Jean Alexander.

I note that next Monday on ITV3 they’re breaking away from the current cycle of Classic Corrie repeats and showing a number of Barlow themed episodes from Episode 1 to Deirdre’s death in 2015. It starts at 10:25am runs until 2:35pm. Sadly there are no episodes from the height of the Ken, Deirdre and Mike triangle in 1983.

That's fab news. Shame that yet again there are so few episodes pre 1990. Not too bothered about the Ken/Deirdre/Mike triangle as I've seen that episode tons of times (as well as episode 1 which is being shown but I can understand that as Ken is the only original cast member still in the show). Good that they are showing some pre 1990s episodes though, the 1981 wedding was the month I was born!
I'm guessing the episodes are Ken focussed as its Bill's 90th later this month. ITV are also doing a documentary which will hopefully show lots of old pre 1990 clips!

I think it was still of a high standard up until early/mid 1984. A lot of cast did depart between late 1983 and late 1984 as you say - the actors who played Albert, Bert and Stan all sadly passed away, Doris Speed retired due to ill health and didnt get a proper exit, Elsie Tanner left for the final time. So we lost 3 original cast members Albert, Elsie and Annie all within about 4 months leaving just Ken from episode 1. Also Len who had been there since almost the start was killed off. Billy Walker and Linda Cheveski returned but both had gone by the end of 1984. I think 1985 was a weak year but I havent seen it in full since Granada Plus showed it (around early 2000 so going back a long time now) , 1986 was a definite improvement with the arrivals of Sally, Jenny, Alan Bradley plus I liked Susan too. It was mid 1986 that Gail had an affair, with Brian's cousin, she didnt know who Sarah's dad was at first but it turned out it was Brian.
Funny that the Ken/Deirdre/Mike triangle is absent but Karen and Steve's wedding isn't - don't remember that focussing much on Ken. Still a great episode though, really looking forward to this.
Maybe its more about the Barlows rather than just Ken, if its Karen and Steve's second wedding they are showing.
Another long term character who left in the 1983/4 period was Fred Gee. I think he was the last to leave just after Stan's funeral in November 1984. There were big changes at the Rovers during this period once Annie left in late 1983. A few temporary managers then Billy Walker took over but he didn't last. Then finally Bet too over as landlady in January 1985. With Annie and Fred leaving plus Bet becoming landlady it was major changes with only Betty and Hilda staying in the same jobs.

I don't normally watch 'celebratory' programmes, but am currently seeing the "Happy Birthday Bill" broadcast on ITV to celebrate the 90th birthday of William Roache.
Rather well put together, with some nice archive footage and behind the scenes views. The first 15 minutes are worth a watch.
Blimey, I hope I'm not still working when I'm 90!

Anyone know where it was where they filmed it?
The Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre in Rochdale. It closed down permanently in December 2020, which I think would explain why the place was so empty of people.
You'd think they would hire a few extras to act as customers to make the place look at least a bit busy.
The Happy Birthday Bill show was really good. It was nice it focussed more on Bill rather than Ken.
The classic episodes shown were excellent too. I particularly liked seeing some from the mid 2000s I hadnt seen since first broadcast. The 1981 wedding was good too with some nice moments with Hilda and Stan, Annie Walker and Albert as well. I noticed they showed the Granada Plus endcap on this one. Aside from Granada Plus airing this it probably hasn't been shown since first broadcast.

Though the Granada Plus endcap indicates it was the version they showed, which would have been edited for time so they could get more ads in (unlike ITV3 who usually show them in extended timeslots)- it gets frustrating when these edits keep surfacing rather than the uncut ones! At least the 1989 one was the original though.
The uncut version is on the Network 1980-89 boxset. A few G+ edits did make it to the 70s and 80s boxsets though.

Obviously with the Toyah storyline, there is a link but the article suggests there may be another reason for him returning to the street. One wonders if it's some sad news about Auntie Em.

It does seem quite possible, as it does seem almost certain that Eileen is never going to return. Another one of those "temporary depatures" that became permanent, like Linda Baldwin and Zoe Tate in Emmerdale.

If this is the end of Emily, at least she did reappear Ken's birthday episode a few years ago.
