In addition to there being one or two more than is often the norm, the clips of the Breakers were longer than usual under Appel on the first show last night; I'd imagine it was felt that TOTP had to make up for the missed week and show as many as possible of the singles which had became hits since then.

I'd expect it's something that TOTP or the BBC did for use on their own shows, considering its lack of recognition - I certainly can't find any other reference to this 1992 cut, and the versions uploaded elsewhere are all the original or its 4K remaster.
Looking back on how close the rerelease got to the top, it does seem odd that 'Barcelona' wasn't a posthumous number one for Freddie considering its relevance to the Olympics and his passing still in recent memory, with that accolade then instead going to the 1993 remix of 'Living On My Own' the following summer. Which I do personally prefer, but it is the less obvious of the two.

It was indeed something Pops made themselves.
Looks like the archive clips are filmised on the story of 1992.... disappointing the producers have made that decision, and with the most basic processing as well,so lots of jerky movement and jagged lines. A real shame as they'd taken care with the presentation of the archive footage in the last few story ofs.
We just got a shot of a satellite uplink test card there complete with the announcement played over it- I presume from one of the master tapes!
Interesting they note how the satellite performances had to be done "live" as the show was beig recorded, certainly wasn't the case by 1994 as the Malcolm McLaren master tape shows the Let Loose performance being played in before the main show starts recording (and even there it's being played in via tape over satellite, as you can see them spooling it).
Interesting they have the raw footage of the Crowded House performance as well, not just what was put through the studio.
Big Hits 92 filmised as well. Looks so bad not even sure if it's intentional or if someone's messed up somewhere down the production chain. When it's done intentionally it's usually processed a hell of a lot letter than this, though why they'd even want to filmise the footage on something like this in the first place, when it's a show made entirely of 30 year old footage that wasn't intended to be filmised and didn't look fantastic in the first place, let alone when you throw away half the motion and resolution.

The clear highlight of which being them dancing to 'Now Get Out Of That', although - and this is the most ultimate of nitpicks - watching the footage over again, it looks the editors did superimpose a VT clock from a later edition (14/05) over the right!
The anecdote about the Bee Gees performance was also actually from the following year, however in that case it's hard to see how they could have made that seem more relevant for 1993's documentary.
The Story Of 1992 featured a few VT clocks.

I enjoyed these programmes, and I see someone had tweeted the same about the 1992 programmes, although bearing in mind that the only other things on BBC2 on Saturday were four hours of athletics and a load of ancient repeats, that isn't too much of a surprise. Not sure it's worth a "booooom", but YMMV.
New graphics on the 1992 programmes, I see, the first one I think not to use the graphics and title sequence that they've used for every one since 1976.
To remove the Graphics at the start of the Billy Ray Cyrus and En Vogue performances, they used later shots of Billy Rays band for the former and the latter audience shots from another show.

At a guess, 1991 was made and put on hold before the decision to do the rest of the 90s in one go, hence why 1992 onwards has a new look?
Also I wonder why the title of the "Big Hits" compilation seems to challenge the listings so much...on screen it has always been "Big Hits 19XX" but always got listed as "19XX Big Hits". Now it seems to have become "19XX Biggest Hits" in the listings but on screen it's still titled the same as it always was. A minor thing but really odd.
Things I didn't expect from watching TOTP repeats: becoming a fan of an Enya song.

Disappointed nobody has yet mentioned the first episode was on pivotal importance as the first one with the big BBC logo next to the copyright date. As important as when they stopped putting "colour" next to it and changed to Roman numerals.
