I wonder which set ITV's live special will come from tonight. I suspect GMB rather than This Morning. Or perhaps something a bit more bespoke along the lines of the Martin Lewis Coronavirus Special last year.

Even 4pm is clearly pushing it. Even if a combined R1/1Xtra/6Music service they clearly need something less formal than the Radio 4 simulcast. Radio should be an avenue for the public to share their tributes and there are other angles to be taken rather than the formalities of the situation, which given the chance Radio 1 would do really well - and I've no doubt the likes of Jordan North and Matt and Mollie would be the professionals they need to be in this situation and strike the right tone with their audience.

For me simulcasting Radio 4 makes it appear to be news only older serious news junkies will care about and even if that was what was pre-planned they should be observing reaction and changing those plans as quickly as possible. At least get Newsbeat on air this evening and then just have something more chilled during the evening which wouldn't be inappropriate.

I suspect it is due to how everything has been scaled back due to COVID and how, as I remember reading in that piece about Soundtracking 9/11 many years ago, in a major news situation like this, they suddenly need to find a lot more music, and suitable music at that in a very short space of time.

That won't be the case, it's not a surprise they've been preparing for it for a long while. Having playlists of sombre music on playout systems ready isn't exactly difficult these days, nor is having people working from home able to access those systems.

It's an editorial decision, I imagine the controllers of those stations are itching to get back on air. I doubt it will happen again like this next time

A man of 99, and in hospital for 26 days an infection and then received surgury for a heart defect, then comes out to recover at home.
If as a radio station programme controller, you haven't asked your music scheduler to go through Selector and pull out ready, with anything which is slow/mid slow tempo and lyrics with no mention of death or loss - then I'd argue you haven't done your job properly.

Capital's playlist at the moment is almost comical in the tone that it's trying to strike. The last three songs have been 'somebody you loved', 'take a bow' and now 'I'll be missing you'.

I think that R1/1Xtra/Asian Network and maybe 6Music should be doing their own simulcast obit, slightly less formal than Radio 4, more chilled vibe. And the leave the format, format news special to R2/R3/R4/R4Xtra/R5
