CBS This Morning relaunches as "CBS Mornings"
#31
For anyone who's interested, as it's Labor Day in the US, CBSN is taking the final edition of CBS This Morning live and in full.

Watching on this side of the pond, it feels odd to have a single edition of CBS This Morning this week before the relaunch tomorrow. But I doubt that's an issue in the US where today is still the weekend.

UPDATE: Unsurprisingly, a very low-key end to the final CBS This Morning. Just a short reminder that CBS Morning launches tomorrow, with a bit of footage of the new show. The (substitute) presenters said how the current studio holds lots of memories for them - but that was the extent of the send-off.

I don't think there's anything in the footage that we haven't seen before...

Speaking of transition, CBS News has just posted a 360° immersive video which offers a tour of the new Times Square studio... sadly, they are not going to use any views, as all windows are covered by the immersive videowalls used for the 2020 Election HQ. There's also a glimpse of another cut of the show's new theme (possibly the EyeOpener cut?), integrating both Abblasen and the CBS sonic logo.

I see the Eye Opener is staying with the new programme.

The set looks good, but could be anywhere. I'm surprised the 'view' behind the virtual frosted windows is of a skyline rather than Times Square, but maybe they thought that would have looked too similar to GMA.

I haven't seen outdoor shots of Times Square in the opening titles or in and out of any breaks so far, but I'm watching on CBSN and they cut some of these bits short.

They're certainly emphasising their commitment to hard news with an in-depth report on domestic violence in the first hour. Editorially, the first hour seems very similar to CBS This Morning.

Their plans for the second hour sound interesting, so it's a shame CBSN doesn't show that.

I like the Eye Opener music with the combination of the CBS sonic logo and the Abblasen fanfare.

Really not a fan of the new Eye-Opener theme - much worse than the last one (which I thought was brilliant and perfect for a breakfast show).

Initial reactions in my opinion are mostly positive.
The Likes:
LOVE LOVE LOVE the addition of the new CBS mnemonic added to the CBS Sunday Morning theme during the 1st hour EyeOpener, it was gone for the 8am EyeOpener. It sounds great. I think CBS did a great job. As I expected there were copious shots of the exterior of the building and the billboards and the bustle was very present on the show. So for the windows to be on display or for the screens to have exteriors shots in my opinion was unnecessary. Also to a certain extent most of the Networks news output is very NYC-centric anyway, ignoring the rest of the country so the windows were kinda not needed in way. Nate Burleson did a great job. But I do think Tony and Gale should have handled more of the newsier parts in the front of the broadcast. The set doesnt feel cold due to the materials that were used. The 1st hour reports for the most part were longer and not presented at the breakneck speed as GMA and TODAY, but not as purposely slow like CBS SUNDAY MORNING. I like the addition of a meteorologist/climatologist. Though he can slow down a bit. Very heavy report from Nora O'Donnell on Military domestic abuse, similar in style to how stories are presented for 60 MINUTES.

The dislikes:
The lower third is waaaaay to similar to CNN, but a different colour. I do like the animation of the lower third.
Dont like the seating at 8AM. Id prefer the table for the entire show. 8AM was certainly a bit fluffier than I'd like but its the 1st show. But they wanted to into the new host and the new studio. So I get that. I expect them to settle a bit more. Also the show format will be tweaked. We will likely start seeing changes as the months go on.

Overall the positives outweigh the negatives.

Out of interest, when did these feature? The only exterior shots that I saw in the edited CBSN version were in the opening link after the 7am eye opener.

What the fresh Hell is that theme tune?

Set great. Graphics great and always loved the Eye Opener.
But… the music is awful. So old fashioned, a backwards step. I thought the music bed on the Eye Opener would redeem it, but it got so repetitive.
The music is quite intrusive.

In fact it’s just as awful as this!

I'm really liking this look (and sound) I was a bit concerned how it would turn out based on the preview, but this feels really fresh.

TBH I like the new theme music, it's so different to anything I've heard before for a breakfast show.
During the eye-opener segment the logo is on the right and doesn't align with the ticker underneath and yet after the segment it moves to left with a thin line which looks better because it's aligned with the box below. Also the four-note eye-opener transition is already doing my head in.
Then I don't get why the general astons are shorter on either side than the one below, just so they can leave the CBS DOG there.
