Some decent signings so far. John Whaite in a same sex partnership will work well, he’s physically very fit so this will hopefully lead to some exciting and very different dances to what we’re used to (the H & Matt pairing on DOI was incredibly dull). In the last month she's also been on ITV2's Celebrity Karaoke Club & is currently hosting their new physical game show Apocalypse Wow. She's also on Cooking with the Stars on ITV Tuesday nights!

Strictly Come Dancing: John Whaite to be in first all-male partnership

Strictly Come Dancing is to have its first all-male partnership in the show's history, after TV chef John Whaite joined the line-up on Thursday.

Whaite will follow in the footsteps of boxer Nicola Adams, who was the first to have a same-sex partner last year.

It'll be interesting to see whether they opt to keep any of the aspects that were introduced last year due to covid. For example the separate judges desks, having the couples sat alongside the dance floor, and the remotely operated camera that ran on a track down that side. Though social distancing is no longer required and close contacts who've been fully vaccinated don't need to self-isolate there's presumably still a risk of a individuals testing positive, which has the potential to impact the show/series.

I would bet good money that they will be keeping most Covid-safety practices in place. The last thing they want is to risk a breakout in either the cast or the crew. Most TV shows in production at the moment are strictly (pardon the pun) sticking to Covid regulations because if they didn't then one positive test could derail the whole production.

IMO They won't risk it, and we won't see live and large scale productions like this easing things in a big way for a while yet.

These announcements are actually for the 2022 series.

Why would they reveal the 2022 line up a year in advance?

I think Strictly Come Dancing would see, their 2020 Covid protocols were nearly 99% perfect, compared to their ITV rivals at Dancing on Ice, whose 2021 series just went down the toilet, so keeping their 2020 arrangements would be surely a no brainer.

The desk with the judges could be changed, to the style used on Dancing with the Stars in USA, a huge desk, with the judges set apart. But the individual podiums looks far better on screen, so I guess they will keep it.

Although Dancing on Ice was unfortunate, constantly referring to it as if they were careless or lazy is probably inaccurate, and also offensive to the production team who doubtless worked tirelessly to get the programme on air and made sure they all reached for the highest standards. Of course, they were obliged to make it a Covid-secure production because it was the law, and indeed the fact that numerous people ended up dropping out illustrates that, they were required to do so.

It's also a fact that Dancing on Ice was unfortunate enough to take place in the early part of this year which was the absolute height of the second wave and when cases were at their peak, certainly compared to when Strictly was on when cases were pretty low for the most part.

There's certainly not going to be any crowing from Strictly that they got a series out pretty successfully and Dancing On Ice didn't, because they're all professionals (I'm sure some of the crew work on both), they know how hard they work and they know that it could easily have happened to them. And they'd know rather more about how it worked than someone just watching it on TV.

Exactly, and most of the DoI withdrawals were injury related rather than covid anyway.

I think it was only Rufus and Joe who had to quit due to either positive tests or missing shows through isolation, so just one more than Strictly contestant wise, but they also lost a co-host in Rylan and a judge for two weeks due to covid related isolation too. HRVY was also affected but pre-series so didn't have to withdraw.

I was watching an interview with Alex Jones recently where she said she looked back at the clips of The One Show and she thinks it looks bizarre now that she was pretty much sat on Matt's lap. I assume we won't be seeing that kind of thing for a while, but lots of things go in and out of fashion on TV all the time - think about how we had a load of virtual sets on TV in the nineties, then they went out of fashion and everything had a real set again, and now we're seeing the return of virtual sets. And it may be the case that in a few years time, when this is all over, someone might think huge sets and people sitting apart looks a bit cold and they want to bring everyone together again, and we're back to where we were.

I don't think we give ourselves enough credit for how quickly people adjust to things - we got pretty used to the social distancing, and then when shows like Richard Osman's House of Games switch to repeats at first it feels like everybody is so close to each other but it soon feels normal again.

I think with social distancing people have become more aware of their own and others personal space and though it won't continue long term to the extreme of 2m's I think there will be a slight shift in the short term at least, but as you say these things naturally evolve one way and then back the other.
