If David Lowe, alongside George Fenton make an even better version of these https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDXpyvEB6go , I'd be over the Moon! Plus just as itsrobert once said on TVF, the pips have now been flogged to death now.

I think you're right but it is also now a quintessential feature of the BBC design. Only need to listen to the new smartspeaker 'titles' and its such a versatile element that is resonant with the theme that works.
Thank you very much, but I don't understand the thing you said about the smartspeaker 'titles'. Do you mean the pips?

I liked 60 seconds myself, and I also liked the short hourly summaries on BBC1 and BBC2 back in the day, which they decided they didn't need because of News 24, which was absolutely stupid. The audience who watched those short summaries didn't necessarily want to watch rolling news, they're different audiences with different requirements. I'd prefer to see those short summaries return.

I think perhaps he is talking about the titles on these:

Those sound brilliant. With very little tweaking they'd work brilliantly on TV.

You must send this to the BBC immediately! This is the greatest thing I have ever heard! Just as Alfie said, a little tweak and they will be outstanding!

I agree with the tweaking comment. The thing that I woud do these is keep a 4/4 beat and length to the 1999 era theme. Use the pips as the framework of the composition and them remove said pips. But if developed more could be a good first audio work in The Gallery.

I would love to hear your versions for the Breakfast, 1pm and 9pm themes

In regards to earlier discussions about the pace of the openings becoming longer in recent years, here is a case in point. It's the history of the BBC News at 10 intros from the last 50 years. The second half of the video only has intros from the last 15 years.

It's true that the headline sequences have got longer over time and I would agree that they should be shorter and punchier. But I think the fast-paced headline sequences were something that only started when they began doing them pre-title. If you go back and watch some of the post-title headlines, during the 1980s, they were quite slow-paced.

It's rather amusing that, in an age where they are fighting for the attention of a population with an (apparently) decreasing attention-span, the BBC have made their television news headline sequences as long as possible.
Radio, thankfully, haven't quite succumbed to this yet.

Ironically, I think that is the exact reason why they elongated them. The headlines now act as a summary so if those viewers with short attention spans switch off afterwards, at least they have seen some news from the BBC. But, for those people who want to watch the entire broadcast, they are rather longwinded and unnecessary. I particularly hate the SOTs (is that the right term?) during the headlines that get repeated as part of VTs moments later.

I think BBC News in the 1990s had the headlines about right. They weren't limited to 5" intervals like they were after 1999 but they did stick to shortish headlines without SOTs.
