BBC One: 2022 Idents

At 6:15 this evening, before BBC News, the Sky - Evening ident was introduced. Just the Sky - Daytime ident left to be revealed!

I've just realised that in the Hall idents there's a man walking down the stairs with a ladder at the exact same point in each one! :o It's pretty clever!

If I had to pick my favourite one, it would (so far) be between Market and Sky. The music on Market is really nice, but Sky is beautiful

It's a good ident but I have to go with the campsite at night. The visuals, the colours, BBC ONE disappearing behind the tents, lovely stuff.

Oh that's a very nice touch. Personally I'm really impressed with these and looking forward to seeing the new additions, I remember Thistle saying Lido should be coming at some point this month. Love the concept of the lens and the nod to the classic globe idents with the central circle and the camera rotation.

Only things I would change is to have the lens distortion stay throughout and a distinctive musical motif. But still very happy to finally have something decent on BBC One.

I think I've realised why Warehouse (why's it called warehouse when it's not a hecking warehouse?) doesn't quite work as well - the Rave variant doesn't appear to have been filmed in the same location as the others (ie with the subject under/in the arch).

If you look close enough, you can see the existing arch through the large laser light, the DJ is positioned towards the back of the area.

I am happy to assume that it IS, since that's the whole point, but I just can't see it at all because of how differently dressed the area is in the different scenes.

The whole concept of these new idents is that it's showcasing three different usages of the same setting. It's just not clear to me at all that this IS the same setting, so the effect is completely lost on me. As a result, I'm sorry to say that all I see when I watch this 'Warehouse' ident is three entirely disconnected clips of a woman lying down, people skating, and people jumping.

It's a real shame as I really like the Hall, Bench, and Farm idents.

When done well, I think there's something quite pleasing about this sort of 'people doing run of the mill activities' (e.g. walking through a market, sitting on a bench) type of ident, as you can't fail to feel some form of connection to what you're seeing as you're used to doing those same things yourself, so there's something of a comforting familiarity about them.

I honestly disagree, and I feel like I have to apologise for being against something that seems to be liked by the majority. I genuinely do not want to be a moaner with this, but it’s the fact that without the logo, it could quite easily be for any other mainstream channel. For me, it’s not uniquely BBC1.

I like the lens as a concept, but as you say, it could easily have applied to ITV in 2013, or perhaps several others, like Channel 4 in 1996, or Scottish/Grampian in 2000, or five/UK Gold in 2002. The “people doing things” aspect also makes it difficult to instantly tell if it’s a trailer, an ident or an actual programme. It’s going to sound stuffy (and I say this as someone who’s only 34), but you did kind of know where you were with older symbols front and centre.

The idents literally came out yesterday, of course it's not immediately identified as BBC1.

Agreed. They did come out yesterday, and the Globe "was" BBC One due to its longevity. These idents are good so far, but let's give it time to spread its wings.

Yes, I think you're bang on there.

You've got the staircase in 'Hall', the fence and trees in 'Farm', the bench in - you guessed it - 'Bench'. It's immediately obvious to the viewer that it's the same place and the effect is, genuinely, very impressive. When it's clear, it works fantastically well.

There's nothing making this location consistency clear in the 'Warehouse' ident, though, and with the varied array of large, bulky 'props' (e.g. the skating slopes, the art backdrop) covering different bits of the frame in each scene, coupled with the darkness of 'Rave' with the bright lights shining in different directions causing the shape of the arches to be obscured, and the general briefness of the 'lens' effect generally, it's really difficult to see these activities as taking place in the same setting, and that's why it falls flat for me.

This doesn't take anything away from the fact that, overall, I think these new idents have a great concept, and that they work fantastically well in more versions than not, but I really do feel that it's a case of being a brilliant concept poorly executed in this 'Warehouse' case.

I actually saw a part of the arch at the beginning of that ident. Everything else is just dark. Doesn't ruin the immersion of these idents, especially knowing there will soon be MORE of them!

Whether it was intentional or not, there does seem to be a distinct colour palette of quite muted blues, greens and purples across the whole ident set.

Consequently the brighter colours in Farmland - Festival makes it stand out more than the others.
