Saturday Night Takeaway

And we all know you’ll be here on Saturday complaining about the returning features, but at the end of the day they do ‘Read My Lips’ about 3 times a year, they’ve probably done it no more than a dozen in total. An item on Noel’s House Party probably ran to about 60 goes before they changed it up

Absolutely, but to be fair NHP would drop thing from one series to the next (or even midway through) if they didn't work - which happened increasingly often from series 5 onwards. There are some things on SNT which may only be used three times a year but it is questionable whether they should have lasted more than one series.

Ultimately though nobody compares to Ant and Dec on British TV and they are pretty much the only generic light entertainment format on TV at the moment (rather than something formatted as a talent show or game show). I gave it a miss last year but will likely come back to it this year and I think the return of the audience should give it a real boost.

I might be wrong, but I’m sure most things, if not every thing appeared on House Party every week, so even if the idea only lasted one series, that’s 22 editions of an item,.

Noel's House Party for its very first series ran from November 1991 until March 1992 which consisted of 18 editions in total. For the second series it settled into an October to March run, which would consist of around 22 episodes per series.

In 1993, there was the bomb scare at BBC Television Centre which meant no episode airing on Saturday 6th March 1993, with Noel presenting from the CBBC broom cupboard studio introducing a repeat of the 1991 Noel's Christmas Presents and then a Tom and Jerry cartoon.

In January 1998 there was major problems over content and quality, with Noel refusing to host the show, which meant a repeat of Best of Noel's House Party on Saturday 3rd January 1998 and the following Saturday they were back in the studio live, but Noel was there to simply link best of Gotcha moments, which gave the production team sometime to reformat the show.

Not the same kind of Saturday night show, obviously, but the Wall was played on Gladiators every single week.

(And, of course, the Eliminator - although there would have been no show without that.  Wink )

The Eliminator may have always been used, but they did change it up sometimes with different obstacles, whereas The Wall was always the exact same thing.

It'll be interesting to see if they can get through a whole series without a disruption of some sort, as when you think about it 2017 was the last normal series. 2018, of course was when Ant had the accident so Dec had to host the last two shows on his own, there wasn't a series in 2019, in 2020, the show was disrupted due to lockdown so had no audience to begin with and then filmed from A&D's home.
Then last year of course, still no studio audience but a virtual audience instead so felt quite different!

I can’t for the life of me remember why there wasn’t a series in 2019?

Because Ant wasn’t fully back?

actually in 2020 it did have audience to begin up till about Episode 4 not that it matters though

As mentioned the 2020 series did have a live studio audience for the first four editions. Their live edition on Saturday 14th March 2020 got a lot of bad publicity, as many felt having a 600 jam packed studio audience at a time looked bad when the government advised against mass gatherings.

I remember the opening of that show, where Ant and Dec sort of made a joke about the situation, by both showing themselves using hand sanitiser before walking down through the audience, and not shaking hands with any of them, as they would usually had done.

The following show on Saturday 21st March 2020 was performed in a empty studio, filled only by their production crew, and the large audience seating platform nearly empty, looked so strange. That edition was also shortened to 60 minutes. The following two shows after that were presented remotely via Ant and Dec's homes.

Yeah, it was because Ant was unavailable. Same reason Holly did the previous year's I'm A Celeb. He was back in time for Britain's Got Talent.

Yes, it has seemed like it's been a bit of a cursed programme over the last few years. Fingers crossed for a smooth 2022 series! We're due one!

I really like A&DSNT - it's a bit of light relief at the end of the working week. Bit of silly fun. I think we need as much as possible of that kind of thing to counteract all the negativity and uncertainties of the world. I wish them well.

Maybe the show would suit a 60 minute or 75 minute format, than the current 90 minute one? Sometimes the show does feel very dragged out and the energy certainly drops half way through the show. Noel's House Party back in their heyday very rarely ever went over one hour, and maybe SNT would suit a more tighter time slot?
