The shrink in font size is a step back. An intention of MLN's 1997 design, as we all know, is make the words clearer in fine print than the 1988 logo. After shrinking the images of different logos myself, I think that the new logo's readability falls in between the 1997 and 1988 looks: the counters not as chunky as 1997, but they don't disappear like 1988. To those accustomed to the big, Gill Sans look, it's certainly worse.
Alas, I do hope the one we're seeing now is a prototype, much like the BBC1 globe and BBC2 redesigns were amended from the crude look to the styles viewers know and love. Thank you for your detailed explanation, but I fear it's no prototype, the new BBC logo is not only in use on BBC Select, but also on BBC Kids (which is a brand new BBC channel for Australia), so it'a already being used on air I see. Hope the official (worldwide) launch and presentation refresh cover up the logo's limitations then

If it's true, what a terrible decision.

I wonder if this is indeed true, when we’ll start to see the updated BBC blocks on channel branding and the BBC website etc? Will they launch to a big fanfare or will it be a soft launch? Something tells me it’ll be the latter for cost reasons.

I genuinely believe the reason for them expunging Gill Sans has nothing to do with licensing or mobile aesthetics and readability, it is the unfortunate and uncomfortable reality of having a master brand derived from the work of a molester and paedophile (Eric Gill).
Given operation yewtree and the other scandals of recent years, it’s easy to see why they are sensitive.
Even so, the replacement is not an improvement on the predecessor and as been mentioned looks more like a mock.
I fear, sadly this will turn out to be the case.

With regards to the statue on BBC Broadcasting House - you don't get rid of a famous statue on the side of this very well known building just because of the past of the sculpture created.
Do people not listen to Michael Jackson songs? A person's work of art, or any work, is not to be destroyed because of their personal life.
Having just realised it’s the BBC’s Centenary next year, I’m guessing it’ll probably launch in the new year then…

I hope it isn't true, I think the block logo is past it, but it is better than replacing it with more blocks which look a bit watery.
If you go onto the BBC careers site you can see several variations of the BBC logo...
Maybe it will grow on me.
I am not one for ripping down statues, at the same time I would prefer it wasn't there. As a compromise some sort of info board near by?
I've got a better idea, just bring this one back. Job done.

It says on their twitter it is an opinion piece, the article shows the guy isn't a massive fan, how would he know about it in the first place. Will believe it when I see it.

I think this one actually looks more in line with designs these days, although font needs updating and it needs a touch of modern! Lots of companies are going back to their more basic designs of the 70s and 80s.
Or even the BBC mosaic logo!
I don't think I'm going to cope well with this change, the 1997 one was the one I grew up with!

Hmmm… seems a bit far away ;-) ;-)
If the logo does change (which is a big if) and it brings with it some branding consistency across the BBC then it could be a good thing.
I actually don’t think it’s too bad, to me it feels like when the Twitter bird logo changed and for a while it looked really off.
On the other hand, if it ain’t broke…

This is a really good point, but the new Reith typeface, which appears on the new BBC logo was started to be introduced in 2017-2018, by that point the Gill Sans typeface had been in use for 20 years, if they really wanted to expunge Gill Sans because of that, then why it took 20 years? Surely they could have done it earlier. Also by the time the BBC adopted Gill Sans back in 1997, the acts of bestiality committed by Eric Gill were already known and discovered....and that is why makes it even more bewildering to me

Well, BBC Two, CBBC and Cbeebies could just update the BBC logo and leave everything else as is. Same goes for News, Sport, Weather, and iPlayer. I think it's guaranteed that BBC One will get a new look, as we know The One Show is getting a new look soon - their current one contains the One in the same font as the BBC One logo. Their original look was shortlived because it also used the then-current (Gill Sans) font, the current one's been used since the circle idents launched. BBC Three will presumably get a new look when it returns to linear TV too. Which leaves BBC Four. A Reithed box (including the FOUR) but otherwise left as is?
