When continuity announcements tell you about an upcoming programme... right after a trailer for the same programme.

That’s what I was about to say. Rarely do the announcers even refer to the promo (eg. “As you’ve just seen...”). I’m not sure how much autonomy an announcer has over which programmes to point to/promote in their link - but it almost feels like they have no knowledge that a promo has just ran for the very show they are talking about!

As for breakdowns - as Steve said above - keep us informed but actually tell us something rather than repeat a generic script every 30 seconds or so.

Or when they basically tell you what is going to happen when introducing the programme - Granada used to be terrible for that with the soaps.

Talking of which though my ultimate pet peeve at the moment is content warnings, not just at the beginning but also in the breaks. Hollyoaks is the worst for this and for some time they've had warnings at the beginning and in the middle about "emotional and difficult scenes" for every single episode, which made them redundant as when there was anything that might require such a warning it became ineffective due to being overused. I also think it is quite poor form to suggest that having an emotional reaction is something that you should be warned about - it's quite natural and healthy.

I've been guilty of planning this, it's for reinforcement/building it up. A promo back reference.

In my plans, I would have indicated to them to 'reference it' (they would have seen a copy of the promo). I guess it depends on how the announcer wants to execute it, unless there's a strong marketing message behind it [i.e. big promo campaign]

Talking over credits, can sometimes spoil the mood, especially if the credits are non-standard (say, with no or slowed music because a character died).

Credits shrunk to unreadable sizes.

Original endcaps in old shows being replaced by modern ones.

Coming up next on BBC One, (name of programme), but the next programme isn't what was announced due to a regional variation (i.e. Super League Show). In such cases, don't play out the continuity announcement in the affected regions!

I appreciate when CAs have, or are afforded, the ability and capacity to reference the trailer which has just been shown in their links; for me, it's more when the key points of the trailer (title, start time rather than 'in x minutes etc.) are merely regurgitated.

In terms of soap opera/continuing drama content warnings, I appreciate and accept *why* they're done, but when social media realises the likes of 'emotional times ahead... on Hollyoaks' is bordering on Memetic Mutation, you know it's losing a sense of credible purpose.

The way that certain music channels insist on cropping old 4:3 videos to fit 16:9. This combined with the sub-SD picture quality and excessive use of mostly unnecessary onscreen clutter makes for a frustrating experience.

Those awful 'Our Time' sponsorship bumpers that have infested the likes of GOLD and Drama.

Biggest annoyance - continuity announcers who don't have the foggiest clue what they're even talking about; i.e. "Views from Storm Front (just one example, I have many more I can think off too) with a complete lack of due care and attention. Just blindly reading the script even though common sense should kick in as your talking and realise it's just complete nonsense you're just speaking.

And announcers who cannot pronounce words correctly, and have terrible tone, pace and delivery.
If it's your job to speak to the nation then it shouldn't be too much to expect you get the basics right. Just like getting on a train or plane and goes without saying you expect him/her/they know what they're doing!

(This (the above) goes for several channels and several announcers in this day and age...it's true they don't make announcers like they us to!)
"From today you'll hear some new voices when you're watching UTV, as for the time being we're handing over to our colleagues at ITV, but rest assured Julian and I will be back with you as soon as possible"

Yes, network really should be more on the ball here and make the ECPs etc regionally safe. The shows opted out of are generally fairly disposable repeats anyway so no great need to plug them in earlier junctions?
Write that down in your copybook now

Similarly, I hate it when old TV programmes and archive is cropped or zoomed / butchered to fit 16:9 broadcasts.

The almost total lack of warm continuity announcers who you feel like making a cuppa for when they're talking to you, instead of the achingly desperate attempts to sound like your bestest chum after taking a social skills course from Global.

"Steve McDonald's not the groom AGAIN?" sound of TV being smashed

It's already been mentioned but all the graphics on the Now music channels when videos are playing. All four corners covered!

"Plastering" older production/network logos with either the current logo (sometimes not matching with the original aspect ratio), or if the original company no longer exists, inserting the logo of the company who now owns the property rights. :|

I prefer when the original credits are left intact as it reflects the era of the time of when the program originally aired. It's also somewhat comforting. Logo preservation becomes difficult because of this practice.

Happens alot on of other channels too, older versions of shows such as Family Guy and The Simpsons which are automatically stretched on SD versions of the channels.
