From a couple of weeks ago, BBC Red Button's cheap and cheerful single camera Rugby Leage OB from Featherstone falls off air. Luckily the commentators are in Salford so were able to play continuity announcer for a while before reading some viewer's tweets.
Interesting that the slate shown when the feed disappears is BBC News branded, although as it's never supposed to make it to air that's not a big deal.

The MVP kit that generates that is probably more used for News and maybe even have been paid for by them.
You can load any slate into it that you want, but sod's law is that you then suddenly need to change at short notice the decoder in use, and then the other unit has something completely wrong on it.
Only noticable when the feed disappears of course.
"MR WMT"? Any ideas on a meaning for those?

WMT is Wireless Multiplex Terminal/Technology, the thing where several mobile sim cards are bonded together.
MR would be Manchester.

I admit I'm not a fan of clips that have just been ripped from TV Ark and the likes and uploaded to YouTube, like the video above has been.

I don't approve of ripping but at the same time the TV ark site isn't or wasn't the easiest site to use in terms of video playback. I think it is much better now. I have to admit a lot of these types of clips on YouTube are ripped from the site in the past. I never understood why TV ark didn't migrate to YouTube or other similar platforms.

The perils of “off-tube commentary”, which used to be fairly common, so much so that at television centre there were two specifically designated voiceover booths designed for that very purpose: OTCA1 and 2. On the clip, I initially wondered if that was a radio commentary given the style of their description (maybe it’s just what those two commentators are more used to doing?) but it’s absolutely clear they’re up a certain creek without a paddle when the picture goes. It’s obviously going through some sort of production area though because they have a graphics engine at their disposal (possibly a CasparCG given the way the background comes up separately to the foreground?) which they go to eventually. Quite a decent breakdown recovery to be fair.
The main commentator was Sharon Shortle (Sports Editor, Radio York), so I think you are probably right about being more used to that style of commentary. Dave Woods is the other voice, who does TV commentary for the SuperLeague show but also for 5 Live (and used to be the Radio Leeds breakfast presenter in the mid 90s)
I guess in certain respects they are no more up the creek than if they had been at the ground and had fallen off air with the pictures. At least they could fill for a bit.

An unusual technical error once, in the early 90s on Scottish, was we were going to an ad break, before a local news bulletin. But, instead of seeing adverts, for a few seconds, we saw Geoff brown in the news studio. He was on the phone to someone, then the screen went black and the adverts ran.
Similar situation in 2001 on S4C, during y clwb rygbi. Instead of seeing adverts, we saw the present for a few seconds, writing on her sheets, before seeing adverts.
Not a breakdown as such. But this one is just, odd.
A computer (running Windows NT 4.0 in this clip) was playing the closedown slides for S4C and the machine itself was being "closed down"
What would have caused this to occur?
Was somebody powering off all the systems for the night and they accidentally switched off the very computer that was on air?

I think that there's definitely a human involved here. It's unlikely to be automated (unless a 3rd party program was used, but I don't think for shutdown they'd use a program that would emulated keyboard press events)
My theory, based on my thoughts, is that someone bumped/pressed the power button, then bumped/pressed enter by accident. They may have wanted to press Esc instead or use the arrow keys beforehand.
It's NT Workstation 4, I'm sure, from what I can make out from the OS selection screen. Workstation editions were discontinued after NT 4, and I can kind of make out the word "Workstation"
If you see at 0:35, you can see a bit of ( https://guidebookgallery.org/pics/gui/st...innt40.png), too, but the sync is out, probably because the program that runs to generate/show the slide changes the resolution/etc when it launches and puts it back when it exits.

Edit: People in the comments of the video say it's NT 4, so looks like I'm probably correct haha.
