Ugh... this tweet has irritated me (and not just because of the use of emojis in a bid to look 'down with the kids').

"We can't wait for some fiery debates, don't hold back!" - Really doesn't bode well as far as I'm concerned.

From past experience, we all know what GMB mean when they say 'fiery debates': shouting, interrupting, not letting the guest give a response, generally putting the creation of a social-media-sharable spectacle above providing something useful... Was really hoping they were moving past this now that He Who Must Not Be Named has shuffled off in a blaze of ignominy.

I'll reserve judgement until I see him 'in action' but I'm not spending my mornings watching 'Good Morning The Jeremy Kyle Show' if they insist on continuing down that path. There's a reason I stopped watching GMB a year ago and only gave the show another shot again in the past few weeks... :|

Hopefully, It's a one off and he only presents for that one week or is only used for Holiday cover but I'll reserve my Judgement until he actually get's into the seat.

With Adil presenting for all of April and Richard Madeley rumoured to do all of June, I can see them as the 2 most likely contenders to replace Piers for good

I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Alastair Campbell strikes me as someone who, whilst he may have some strong opinions, is rather more measured and less boorish and ego-driven than Piers Morgan.

I do wonder how it'll work out though. Has Campbell had any live TV presenting experience before? It'll be interesting to see how he copes.

Alastair has been on things like Jeremy Vine as a panelist and has done interviews for GQ which isn't quite the same as presenting on TV but I think he'll be fine.

Piers' downfall was his ego and the fact he was dismissive of certain topics whereas Alastair has had issues with Mental Health so he is someone who ITV may see as a positive role model due to their Britain Get Talking campaign.

Political stance isnt all that relevant is it? I think Alastair's passionate and tribal enough to be a good 'replacement' for Piers while guest hosting. I'm sure his grilling of ministers that week will be talked about

Well ITV won't know until they try, this is simply testing the waters to judge viewer reaction and see how good he is at a live presenting role. If he turns out to be fairly decent, who knows, by the autumn he might be a regular.

Yes - and at breakfast time as well.
When he was a Daily Mirror hack, he was one of the regular newspaper reviewers on BBC Breakfast News, during the 'morning pink and blue hues' VR studio era.

Alastair did an interesting Instagram live talking about his GMB rehearsals, getting to grips with open talkback and the bits of presenting/paper reviews he's done in the past. Doesn't seem to be on his instagram any longer.

I can see what they’re doing with Alistair Campbell, he’s probably the closest to Piers they could get. I expect we’ll see the same sort of interview with MPs we had previously, just with none of the “tHe WoRlD’s GoNe NuTs” stuff. I don’t like the guy but he’ll be watchable. Just like Piers.

You never know, Ben may need the whole of June off to do tipping point (and he might be taking his usual 3 weeks before the Summer Holidays so he can do all of "GMB Summer") so I wouldn't rule out Richard doing June just yet

Odd they're already advertising Alastair's stint. Makes it look as if it's not worth watching next week.

Wonder if they'll get a Tory face later on to balance out any accusations of bias. Michael Portillo could be a good shout. Indeed had the last few years panned out differently we might be looking at Good Morning Britain with Boris Johnson and Susanna Reid.
