I don't think Batwoman lasted long at 9pm on E4 either, although arguably such shows struggle to stand up on their own compared to airing alongside similar shows on the same channel.

In the late 90s and early 2000s the channel was obsessed with Star Trek spin-offs, Simpsons and that terrible Dreamteam as one of their only UK commissions. It was content with a narrow appeal.
They could and should have built a schedule like the current Channel 5 with some populist British stuff around selected imports. Earlier investment in content away from sport and movies could have helped drive a bigger audience share - might have helped drive subscribers too. Look at the premium of original content now.

Channel 5 is a public service and must have a certain amount of local content, Sky One is not, it wouldn't have that much local content even if it were FTA.

Moreover, it's a successful channel, even if it doesn't have those populist docureality shows and the likes (honestly, I could live without them anyways!)

Though I think with fewer, bigger productions Sky 1 in recent years has contributed hugely to original productions in the UK, more so than both C4 and C5 when it comes to scripted content.

The only Sky 1 commissions that I can ever remember really penetrating public consciousness were An Idiot Abroad and before that Gladiators revival (briefly). Even then I'd be hard pushed to suggest people were driven to subscribe so they could watch these.

Seem to remember Ibiza Uncovered doing well for them in the late 1990s, so much so that it was picked up by Channel 4.

About the only time I remember seeing a Sky One endcap on terrestrial TV.

Indeed I remember the days where I would subscribe to sky just to watch Star Trek, Stargate SG1, and the Simpsons. Star Trek and the Simpsons were also on bbc two at some stage. Not forgetting shows like Lost which were massive at the time.

The only sky one produced content I can remember, is kenny vs spennny, or similar in naming for a U.K. version, an idiot abroad and other stuff I can’t remember the name of but did watch at the time.

Other big channels were Bravo, men and motors and Granda plus on Sky. I still miss a lot of the Bravo content that never got shown again.

Brainiac was a fairly big hit for them I think. It's amazing how cheap the show looked if you watch it back now. I'd say most Sky shows today look pretty premium and feel like they've had a decent budget whereas Brainiac and their other UK shows around that time looked like proper low budget affairs.
