That's not how TV works - sentimentality doesn't pay the bills. If it's allowed to get to 40 then why not 50?
What is interesting is what happens with the show ending here in June but continuing till the end of the year in Australia. Will Fremantle and C5 at least strike a deal to see it through to the end of the run, will the last few episodes find a home elsewhere or will they remain unaired for now at least.
Wasn't Guiding Light axed after 72 years and the other American soaps after so long?
Here, they axed Taggart and The Bill after almost 30 years due to poor ratings. What makes Neighbours any different?
I was thinking on the fans demand too.
Wasn't it the fan demand that prompted C5 to bring back Sunset Beach? If I'm not mistaken, the rights from CBSParamount TV as it was back then (who owned Spelling TV by now) were expensive but C5 bought it to appease the fans.
Then the fans who wanted it back never exactly watched it. But C5 were tied to the contract as a result, so binned the rest of SB they bought in a weekend early morning slot.

How it ends will be interesting - I suspect if they're still hoping it could be picked up after it ends they won't tie up everything, have everyone move or blow up the street.

Will it be Chris Eccleston/Sarah Lancashire/Brenda Blethyn type roles for them afterwards or just The Masked Singer/Celebrity Big Brother Coach Trip on Ice etc?

It just depends on whether they want to leave things, to do a Dynasty type reunion a couple of years later, with just a mini series of three or four episodes, to tie up any remaining loose ends.
Just thinking about how a couple of other soaps ended, that I'm aware of. Take the High Road, which ended its days as just "High Road", it ended with Marie Mcneil getting married, and there was no theme tune over the end credits; it simply showed everyone leaving the church at the end, the bells ringing out over the end credits, and a small tribute at the end. Albion Market ended with a birth, and a wedding, and everyone waving the new couple off to start their happy life together. No special tribute, as I think Granada were embarrassed at the glowing predictions of it getting 18 million viewers, and lasting 25 years, being blown out the water.
Brookside, for anyone who cared to watch, saw Jimmy Corkhill sitting on his lawn being Phil Redmonds mouthpiece, and no I didn't watch it. Precious few did. The Bill had a special tribute to all serving and former Metropolitan Police officers at the end of the end credits, of the final episode.
What will happen come June 10th, what script will be written? We don't know yet. I just wonder, how many viewers will tune into Channel 5 for the final episode.

Deadline seems to think ITV will look at Neighbours, I think it's unlikely myself either for ITV or ITV2:

I can't see ITV buying it, I can't even see where it would go in the schedule, especially with the new hour long evening news, and they aren't going to move or get rid of The Chase any time soon.

Nonsensical, especially as ITV2 have only last month ditched their own soap airings. Repeats of Catchphrase are getting around 300k at 6pm so not far off the 500k Neighbours is getting anyway.

That's an interesting piece.
I cannot see how it'd slot into ITV's current schedule, unless they ditched the 2pm hour long show and played it at 2pm and 5:30pm with everything else shifting half an hour earlier - not very likely.
If they hadn't just announced the early evening changes, could it have worked at 7pm with the current ITV soaps moving to the new post-7:30pm line up?
ITV2 does seem like a more natural fit in terms of scheduling. They could easily accommodate any time slot as nothing is fixed in daytime there. But they have just ditched the daily soap repeats. I guess budget wouldn't be an issue if ITV saw it as a good investment they'd ensure they could find the money regardless of channel. But once again it goes back to the point of, if Channel 5 cannot make the commitment profitable what hope have ITV got?

It seems very unlikely for ITV, the article says it's a perfect replacement for Jeremy Kyle, forgetting that ITV successfully extended their other programmes to fill the gap.
I'm not convinced ITV is willing to cough up £21m for Neighbours, that's lot of money that could be spent on homegrown content.

And if anything the fact they've got successful soaps of their own makes them less likely rather than more.
The BritBox premieres then running it later on ITV2 is an interesting proposition but frankly BritBox can probably make 4-6 original dramas for that price which will do more to improve subscriptions. They'll noticeably upped their game in the last couple of months with original content - content which unlike Neighbours can then be added to their service around the world.

Well ITV were interested in it back in 2007 when it left BBC and there was a bidding war for it with Five if I remember correctly. Times have changed since then however and I really cant see ITV getting it.
If they did however I could see them putting it on ITV2 at either 6.30pm/7.00pm (since there would no longer be a clash with Emmerdale at 7pm any longer) and having a repeat the following day on ITV either by cutting This Morning back half an hour so it actually ends when its still morning. Neighbours could go at 12noon then or bring Loose Women forward and have it at 1pm. Cant see any of this happening however.
