I just don't get the mic issues, why is it so hard?

The mics seem to be working, it is like someone is selecting the wrong feeds, setting the levels wrong, and just mixing them all up.

We had a speculative discussion about gallery operation a few pages back. We think we've deduced that (a) there is only one member of technical staff (the "pilot") directing and doing all the operating, on their own; and (b) there is a single 8-channel sound mixer available in the gallery, probably with layers.

The channel on/off (or, more accurately, open/closed) commands are automated through software called MOSart which also automated the vision mixer. My current assumption is that any studio segment opens ALL the mics and they rely on the relevant radio mics being the only ones switched on at that point. This would explain why outgoing presenter/guest mics are still heard on air while they're being taken off. And any Outside Source is automated when they're taken to air, which would explain why the first words are often clipped. Don't know what happens during boxes on screen of presenters and DTLs, I presume all studio mics and the relevant OS opens, producing the horrible echo because the studio fold back speakers are set far too high (and in my opinion as a BBC sound mixer, shouldn't carry the DTL sound anyway).

When then means when you want to manually change something - for example killing radio mics from outgoing presenters which are still switched on as they leave the studio - the single gallery operator, on top of everything else they're doing, needs to toggle through the sound mixer layers to find the relevant source and then turn it off. This will then be overridden again by MOSart if they go to a non studio source and then back to a studio source (all mics will open again). Or, if a DTL is too quiet, they need to find the source by toggling the layers and turn it up/down. Same for differing presenter levels.

I really think at this point they should go off air at the weekend (if not sooner) and spend the time on technical improvements / rehearsals.

That would be the sensible thing to do, but don’t forget they have their own egos to stroke.

I do feel Andrew left the BBC far too quickly, and did not realise the massive hard work and money needed to have a decently run news channel service.

Andrew Neil was at the BBC for 25 years or so. His exit was probably long overdue, especially with the cost cutting across BBC News struggling to justify what would be a fairly high salary for what is largely late night or lunchtime programming and an outing on election night.

Perhaps he thought this would be This Week 24/7 but it simply isn't.
