While you're right there's some programmes that would look wrong without it, on the other hand it looks completely out of place on programmes like The Antiques Roadshow, Escape To The Country, Gardener's World etc., not that it stops them. There's shows where it works, and shows where it doesn't, but the mentality over the last decade or so has been to just stick it on virtually everything regardless.

The other recollection I had of H&A on ITV (much like Neighbours on BBC) were the closing credits being shortened over time.
By "shortened" you mean removed entirely! You'd just get a brief musical sting and the 7 Network logo. I think that started happening around 1993.
A friend of mine has suggested the show could move to MTV! Alas, I don't think that'll happen, as C5 and MTV are in the same ownership.
In the early days, the BBC saw it as cheap filler material, as their new daytime schedules were beginning. It's been a long time since that.
I was wondering, in the early days, apart from the UK, what other countries took Neighbours, and nowadays, how small is the list compared to say 1989.

That's not how TV works - sentimentality doesn't pay the bills. If it's allowed to get to 40 then why not 50?
What is interesting is what happens with the show ending here in June but continuing till the end of the year in Australia. Will Fremantle and C5 at least strike a deal to see it through to the end of the run, will the last few episodes find a home elsewhere or will they remain unaired for now at least.

No - the lead time is much longer on the Aussie soaps - about six months.

If it doesn't make money for Channel 5, it certainly won't make money for any channel smaller than Channel 5 - which just leaves C4, BBC, or ITV, none of which are likely to be interested. Other channels (outside of Sky perhaps with subscription revenue) will make less than C5 on the programme.
When it was moved from 10 to 10peach, was that a case of 10 burying Neighbours, before Neighbours buried 10?
Seriously, if Channel 5 can't justify forking out for it now, why on earth would they want to lose money on it for another three years? As mentioned above, sentiments don't pay the bills.

Viewers of BBC One Northern Ireland have a slightly different memory of the early evening Neighbours, as BBC One Northern Ireland were the only region to not air Neighbours at 5.35pm for its first decade on air, as BBC One Northern Ireland preferred to air their regional news programme Inside Ulster at 5.35pm.
Reasoning was that BBC One Northern Ireland did not want to go up against Ulster Television (UTV) one hour news programme which aired at 6.00pm and got large audience. So placing their regional news at 5.35pm was a better choice. This meant Neighbours was moved to 6.30pm.
Only in 1996, when Inside Ulster was axed, and Newsline 6.30 began, did Neighbours air on BBC One Northern Ireland at 5.35pm.

Seeing as that article hasn't been updated in 15 years (and in fact nothing on that site's been updated since 2009), I doubt it's going up be updated somehow.
I think the lead time was longer but now it’s more like the uk soaps whereas home and away still has a long lead time
