In the old days, especially pre-1993, did individual regions have to negotiate the rights to air individual programmes? For example, did each region had to pay Granada its own rights fee to air Coronation Street?

IIRC the peak time hours (ie probably 7pm-10pm) were mostly networked in any case, whiich meant for the most part Corrie would go out across the country at the same time. The ITV company gets it money from the adverts in the normal way, plus whatever they'd flogged for Channel 4.

But that was by agreement. If Yorkshire wanted to switch Emmerdale and Corrie round in the schedules they could have.
