I think cinematograpic effects such as focus pulling, and the use swallow depth of field lenses don't belong in news. There was an awful example from Ed Thomas on last night's BBC 10pm news, I was so distracted by it, this morning I can't even recall the subject matter.

There also seems to be a rash of the '25p' filmic effect, even on live reports. Hard to tell sometimes whether it's deliberate, accidental, or just due to poor training.

I'm a huge fan of Chris Mason, but I'm not a huge fan of that style of reporting while the event is still in progress, or finishing up. Seems to have started about 10 years ago with sports news reporting.

I think it works well in the right places, such as an sum up of the day (as this was I think) but shouldn't be overused. It has a touch of everyone wanting to be James Burke

One thing that it does occur to me when I see that is that is how much he was actually concentrating on the speech, particularly the end of he was getting ready to do the piece to camera
