Even in the early 2000s the Saturday tea time bulletin was often one of the hairiest to direct. Match reports were still delivered via ISDN lines from football grounds, some were filed moments before you went to air, others were taken live. I recall there being one main news story and maybe one or two short items (OOVs - out of vision reads) and then the rest all sports results. Most were accompanied by graphics, either tables or result slides, some were still photos, some had composite results with a photo of the reporter filing the ISDN. If you were feeling adventurous you would change sports by coming back to the studio and put a different generic image behind the presenter (a football, a rugby goal, cricket stumps etc). The region I worked in had no graphics staff, so it was templated astons, generic stills and best endeavours all round.
However it being only 5 minutes and 5 seconds long, it could quickly go VERY wrong and I remember getting the stacks badly out of sequence one afternoon and had cricket balls behind the presenter while intro-ing a football result and so on. Oh and you didn’t have a PA either and vision mixed the whole thing yourself.
