Russel's scripts didn't win him fans even back in the day. A lot of the grumpier wing of fandom that is more prevalent on social media now existed back in 2005 but weren't quite as mainstream. And Russel definitely paid attention to them and all they had to say, even mentioning the vitriol in The Writer's Tale and how it drove some of his staff writers to tears.
