I genuinely want to like the new branding, and I think it looks pretty decent on the TV channels’ presentation, but the more I see it elsewhere, the more I think it looks cheap, garish, unsophisticated and basic - especially when it’s just the logo, text and a solid, plain, coloured background. A lot of it has an air of ‘my first mock’ (one star) about it.
I never felt this way about the 1997 branding though, which I thought looked clean, classy and elegant right from its launch.
I think the problem is whilst Reith Sans works well as a functional typeface on screen for text (better than Gill in that respect), but for logos, I just think it looks rather unrefined and clunky.
