As with many people the pandemic probably also made him re-evaluate certain things in his life, suspect he is more than financially set up for life already so offering to double his salary wouldn't make too much difference to his decision, you can't put a price on family and being 10 minutes away from them vs. 10 hours away is a huge difference!
Similar situation to Cat Deeley really, although it seems she is off back to LA for a while soon to film the new season of So You Think You Can Dance
