Well nobody predicted James Corden so who knows. A bit less pressure in the 12.37am slot than at 11.35pm, so they can take a risk.
With no sign that Colbert is giving up anytime soon, or the equivalents on the other networks, not too surprised at this news - but suspect he'll be in the frame each time one of the late night slots opens up and taking a break to do other things now, knowing there is a likely fallback in the future where he could return to late nights in the flagship slot, is a sensible move.
Guess it means we'll have to wait another year for any Gavin and Stacey special though.
