I was skimming through this topic and felt compelled to talk about the whole Saturday morning magazine show debate. I'm on the older end of gen z so I grew up very much with the end of this type of show (think Dick and Dom, TMI, Toonattik and Ministry of Mayhem).
I have to disagree that there is no space for kids wanting to watch a solid 3 hours of linear programming, because frankly, kids watch their favourite twitch personalities streaming for far longer than 2-3 hours. Also, I agree with the user who said that these magazine shows are perfect for going viral, with the 5-10 minute segments. More importantly, it's the personality of the presenters that keeps the whole thing glued together, and keeps people watching, it's the same principle as twitch/youtube streams, or IG and tiktok lives. The initial draw is the game or topic the personality is streaming, but the reason that anyone sticks around to watch for that long is the personality.
Sure you can watch spiderman on demand, it's fantastic too if you do, but the level of interactivity that you you get from in vision presentation that ties up the 3-4 episodes you watch during the magazine show is what really sells the experience of watching it, and I think mash up should probably take a lot more risks than its currently doing.
You keep saying your kids aren't interested but then say that one of them does watch it albeit with multitasking, on the other hand, I have two younger sisters who are 15 and 11 and the younger one pretty much exclusively uses the family tv for viewing so often switches from linear TV to disney +. She gets to go on youtube on my dad's phone for a while everyday, but despite all that she knows the timing of Pop's after school schedule and often tunes in when she wants to, which isn't too different to how I used to watch Pop in 2004-2008.
Like others have said, I don't think it's as simple as saying they don't want to watch this type of content - because they watch condensed versions of this stuff in the form of online live streaming on various apps - rather it hasn't been made available to today's kids in its best form. If Dick and Dom started streaming on twitch with the exact same format, except with the added interactivity of a live chat, I'm certain it would do well. In vision continuity - or continuity in general - is genuinely what makes or breaks a kids channel imo, and I still have good memories of CN because of the City era giving off a similar vibe as CBBC continuity. Frankly, the biggest reason I stuck to watching pop was Rorry and Purrdy, until they started airing reruns of beyblade and other anime.
I have seen both scrambled and mash up and I think both are rather watered down iterations of even the last Saturday morning shows to air before them (which would be Toonattik I presume), and I definitely think CBBC should give Mash Up a shake up now, to really reinvigorate it. These shows worked best when absolutely off the wall stuff was happening which even made the presenters collapse into fits of giggles.
