However it is widely said that already happens on BGT anyway, along with various cheers etc. being recorded before the show starts to be cut into the broadcasts.

Personally I think the shows that have most got away with virtual audiences over the last 18 months are the ones who really embraced it. Last years BGT finals for example incorporated them really well - but whether that would work so well for auditions I'm not so sure, though I'm guessing The Voice went down that route.

Masked Singer US did a similar thing yeah although I think they did it less well, it was more obviously not real. AGT did a good job, it felt near enough normal (AGT is obviously over-edited to hell but that’s normal for them!): https://youtu.be/j_V6PTcCQCc

It’s not something I’d normally be in favour of but in the circumstances I think it’s fine. I think people are utterly fed up of production limitations and virtual audiences, and anything that makes a show feel normal has got to be a positive, even if it involves a bit of ‘TV magic’.

I think virtual audiences in particular are just a turn off at this point. Not so bad if you can’t see them, but I think those big screens as used on BGT and Takeaway are just off putting and disliked, reminding people of the reality outside when these shows are all about escapism.
