I think the show could still work if they followed the successful ABC revival with Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan as judges, but maybe not have the age range quite as restrictive.
Having watched the recent series on Netflix, my only criticism was that there were too many rounds between auditions and live shows. As you had the Hollywood Week, Showstoppers, Top 24 and Top 16 which took up 8 episodes before the Live Shows even began.
However there is much more of a focus of contestants playing their own instruments and singing original songs which did make a difference in showing the strongest singers.
The ideal scenario would be to have say 4-5 weeks of auditions, max 2 weeks of the middle section, and then into the live shows. For judges, you could have someone like Anne-Marie, Dua Lipa or Becky Hill for the young female pop star, Scott Mills as host of the Radio 1 Chart Show, or Greg James as Radio 1 DJ, and then an elder statesman like Elton John for the unpredictable headline grabbing comments.
