I think he's been clearly the best known BBC News face since Buerk and Sissons were pushed out, and thinking beyond BBC1 certainly unparalleled on TV at least once Paxman retired. In terms of profile he pretty much single handedly carries BBC News IMO - the gulf between him and the rest of the team is significantly wider than between the top team at ITV News IMO.
House made a good point though about how perhaps the days of a fixed rota are coming to an end at the BBC, but for me that would be a mistake. For me though there is no better opportunity than now to have a 1999 style revamp where you might parachute relatively unknown faces into the flagship bulletins as frankly at the moment all three suffer from not having a fixed host for the majority of the week. Indeed with Huw's comments about it being time for fresh blood and us knowing a possible revamp of the look of BBC News is on the cards when the new logo comes in this autumn perhaps those conversations are happening.
