I understand Newsday’s place on BBC World News, but why on earth is it appropriate to randomly have a bulletin presented from Singapore on the domestic news channel? It makes zero sense.
This week it seems the BBC NC has effectively shut down at 7pm. Whilst this might be temporary due to Covid related staff absence, even before this week the only UK domestic output on weeknights after 7pm on the NC was 8 - 9pm and 2 x 15 minute paper reviews. If the 11pm Newsday edition will be permanent on the NC, what's the point in the NC providing just 8 - 9pm and 2 x 15 minute paper reviews for UK audiences every weeknight?
Might as well go the whole way and just operate the BBC NC as a daytime only UK service 9am - 6pm and simulcast with World 7pm - 6am, with a short edition of a back half hour filler programme at 6:45pm. Same at weekends.
Ok, well, as one of those staffers, I'm going to highlight two things which I really can't emphasise enough:
Firstly, we are in the midst of a pandemic. Whilst 'double jabbed' and all of that might be used we, our employer (and indeed us individually) have a duty of care. I appreciate that the individual programmes being drip fed isn't ideal but so to is your workforce being off with a potentially life changing illness.
Secondly, we are operating a core service which does reflect the best of our journalism. To be frank, an integrated newsroom should be producing reports and programmes in this way. We now share and collaborate far more than the old days of a specific programme or channel 'desk'.
Things will change and return to a degree of distinctiveness but just in this period I do think it's important to recognise that people are doing all they can.
Thank you for stepping up and writing what you have. I’m sure it’s very challenging reading criticism and tabloid muck when the truth is right there in what you’re written.
I too have friends in the Newsroom who are finding it as challenging as it can be. I honestly can’t imagine trying to keep multiple channels on air during these mental times.
