I really like the idea of making the blocks the hero, and giving it some life. The only criticism I had of '97 was the rigid rules on what you could do (no 3D, don't animate them individually etc.) Thankfully that was relaxed over the years. Presumably the distance now between the blocks is part necessity to make it clearer when they are doing their thing at small sizes. Letters still too small though and the News logo in dark mode looks horrific.
I haven't seen the survey but it sounds very brave if this is going to translate across to the channels. All we can ask for is something consistent and ambitious so if that's what's happening, even if it is going a bit W1A, then good luck to them!
I'll be sad to see the back of some of the current branding though - CBeebies and iPlayer in particular have been excellent since day one.
Worries? I do wonder if we'll see the return of some DOGs to the channels. And whether we might go a bit backwards with the ECP. The BBC have the best template at the moment with full frame, bespoke credits. It would be a shame to lose that to the 'clunking dead fist of Marketing'.
