The shrink in font size is a step back. An intention of MLN's 1997 design, as we all know, is make the words clearer in fine print than the 1988 logo. After shrinking the images of different logos myself, I think that the new logo's readability falls in between the 1997 and 1988 looks: the counters not as chunky as 1997, but they don't disappear like 1988. To those accustomed to the big, Gill Sans look, it's certainly worse.

Alas, I do hope the one we're seeing now is a prototype, much like the BBC1 globe and BBC2 redesigns were amended from the crude look to the styles viewers know and love.
Thank you for your detailed explanation, but I fear it's no prototype, the new BBC logo is not only in use on BBC Select, but also on BBC Kids (which is a brand new BBC channel for Australia), so it'a already being used on air
I see. Hope the official (worldwide) launch and presentation refresh cover up the logo's limitations then Wink
Now on TVTalk, Pres Café and DeviantArt. Goodbye to all that, TVLF.
