I do wonder what the rationale is for having this very asymmetrical split screen design, where you always end up with a large area of the right hand side of the screen left blank with everything pushed (at a really rather small size if there's a few people involved in the interview at once) to the leftmost two-thirds. Just looks 'off' to me, as if there should be something else filling that space on the right that isn't displaying properly.

I don't think that split screens works too well when there's a studio and DTL guest at the same time. A screen showing the DTL guest between the 2 sofas would work better on a wide 2 way shot but judging by the fact they're struggling with the basics adding a studio screen might create more problems!

There's an underused three-way portrait version. Saw it once on Andrew Neil's show and just found this example from Wootton.
